A fresh set of 68 previously unseen photographs linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been made public by Democratic lawmakers in the United States, once again drawing attention to the late financier’s extensive network of high-profile associations. The images feature several well-known public figures, including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, renowned philosopher and linguist Noam Chomsky, and Steve Bannon, a former adviser to ex-President Donald Trump.
Lawmakers and officials accompanying the release have underlined that the presence of individuals in the photographs does not constitute evidence of criminal activity or wrongdoing. They have also clarified that the images are not part of the official “Epstein files” that the US Department of Justice (DOJ) is scheduled to release later this month under a transparency mandate.
The photographs include a wide range of material such as images taken inside private residences, travel-related visuals, passport copies, maps, and screenshots of mobile phone communications. According to those familiar with the disclosure, the intent behind releasing the images was to provide additional context to Epstein’s social and professional circles, rather than to make accusations against individuals shown in the pictures.
Images featuring Noam Chomsky and Steve Bannon
Among the most discussed visuals are photographs showing Jeffrey Epstein seated on a private aircraft alongside Noam Chomsky, the 97-year-old philosopher whose name has surfaced earlier in documents linked to Epstein. Chomsky has previously acknowledged knowing Epstein and meeting him occasionally. In an earlier statement to The Wall Street Journal, Chomsky said Epstein had assisted with arranging money transfers between accounts that did not involve Epstein’s own funds. He has consistently maintained that his interactions were limited and unrelated to any illegal activity.
The newly released set also includes multiple images of Steve Bannon, who served as a senior adviser to Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and the early months of Trump’s first term in office. Observers noted that the setting and attire in the photographs suggest they were taken around the same period as images released earlier in December, though from different angles. Once again, lawmakers emphasised that Bannon’s appearance in the photographs does not imply involvement in any criminal conduct.
Bill Gates appears in two photographs
Two of the 68 images feature Bill Gates, showing him standing with a group of women whose faces have been obscured. The identities of the women are not known. Gates has previously described his association with Epstein as a “mistake”, stating that the meetings took place in the context of philanthropic discussions and that he later severed ties. Gates has repeatedly denied any connection to Epstein’s criminal activities, and no charges or allegations have been brought against him in relation to the case.
Lawmakers reiterated that the images should not be interpreted as proof of misconduct. “Being photographed with Epstein does not, by itself, establish criminal behaviour,” a Democratic aide involved in the release said.
Not part of official DOJ disclosure
Importantly, the 68 photographs are separate from the official cache of Epstein-related documents that the US Congress has directed the Department of Justice to make public by December 19. The DOJ is expected to release thousands of unclassified government records connected to Epstein, with the total volume of data estimated at nearly 300 gigabytes.
According to officials, the forthcoming disclosure may include investigative reports, flight logs, internal communications of government agencies, photographs, videos and interview records. The release is being carried out under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, a law signed by former President Donald Trump on November 19, 2025, with the stated objective of enhancing public transparency around one of the most controversial criminal cases in recent US history.
Scale of the Epstein files
Authorities have indicated that the Epstein files could contain up to 95,000 photographs, along with extensive documentary evidence related to Epstein’s activities and contacts. Epstein, a wealthy financier, was accused of running a large-scale sex trafficking operation involving underage girls, whom he allegedly recruited and supplied to powerful clients. Numerous victims have accused him of sexual abuse, describing patterns of exploitation that spanned years and multiple locations.
While Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial, the network surrounding him has continued to raise questions about accountability, oversight and the extent of his influence. Previous document releases have already revealed names of influential individuals who interacted with Epstein socially or professionally, though in most cases without evidence of criminal liability.
Emphasis on due process
With the latest images now in the public domain and a much larger disclosure imminent, lawmakers and legal experts have urged caution. They stress the importance of distinguishing between association and culpability, warning against trial by implication or speculation.
As the Justice Department prepares to release the full set of unclassified files, scrutiny of Epstein’s past is expected to intensify further. Whether the forthcoming documents will shed new light on unresolved questions—or simply reaffirm what is already known—remains to be seen.
