Scope of the Outage
Outage tracking platform Downdetector reported that in addition to Amazon’s own services, digital platforms across gaming, finance, messaging, and ride-hailing were affected. Services impacted include:
- Gaming: Fortnite, Roblox, Clash Royale, Clash of Clans
- Finance: Coinbase, Robinhood, Venmo, Chime
- Messaging: Signal, Snapchat
- Ride-Hailing: Lyft
AWS operates the U.S.-EAST-1 region, a key hub for many of these services, where increased error rates and latency were observed.
Company Responses
AWS posted an update on its status page:
“We are observing increased error rates and latencies across multiple AWS services in the U.S.-EAST-1 region. Our teams are actively working to identify the root cause and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.”
Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas confirmed on X (formerly Twitter):
“Perplexity is currently down. The root cause is an AWS issue. Our engineering team is working to resolve it as soon as possible.”
Similarly, Coinbase, Robinhood, and Lyft acknowledged disruptions caused by the AWS outage.
Signal President Meredith Whittaker added:
“The AWS outage is impacting Signal users globally. Some may face delays in sending or receiving messages. We’re monitoring the situation closely.”
Industry Impact
AWS provides cloud computing, storage, and digital services to companies, governments, and individuals globally. Outages of this scale highlight the dependence of businesses on cloud infrastructure. Experts warn that such disruptions can have cascading effects on commerce, finance, and digital services.
As of Monday evening, services were partially restored, but Amazon and AWS have not provided a detailed explanation or timeline for full resolution.
