Bengaluru- In an unusual turn of events, the South West Division Police of Bengaluru have apprehended a gang of eight individuals allegedly running an online investment scam. The accused lured unsuspecting investors with promises of high returns and tricked them into downloading malicious APK files, allowing the perpetrators to hack bank and digital accounts.
The investigation gained momentum when one of the gang’s own employees, defrauded in the process, walked out and alerted authorities, helping police dismantle the operation.
Police Raids and Arrests
Under the leadership of DCP South West Anitha Haddannavar, police conducted coordinated raids at seven locations, leading to the arrest of all eight accused.

Authorities seized significant material including:
- 15 laptops, 40 mobile phones, 11 pen drives
- 42 SIM cards, 4 iPads, 2 hard disks
- 10 memory cards, foreign currency, luxury branded watches
- Currency counting machines and over 50 bank account documents
Modus Operandi
Senior police officials explained the gang’s modus operandi:
1. The accused sent random messages via WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram promising high investment returns.
2. Interested individuals were sent an APK link and instructed to fill a form to join the “investment group.”
3. Once the link was activated, the accused gained access to the victims’ accounts and transferred funds to multiple bank accounts under their control.
Investigation and Next Steps
A case has been registered at Kengeri Police Station, and police are continuing efforts to trace all victims both in India and abroad. Authorities have urged anyone who has lost money in the scam to come forward and file a complaint.

Cybercrime experts note that scams involving malicious software and social engineering are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
“Criminals are exploiting both technology and trust, making even savvy users vulnerable,” said a senior cybersecurity analyst.
