Expert View

A communications technology expert, observes:

“BSNL’s satellite phone could be a game-changer for digital and emergency communications in India’s remote areas. Where mobile networks fail, this device ensures reliable connectivity, which is critical for disaster management, high-altitude operations, and border regions. Its integration of UPI and internet functionality makes it not just an emergency tool but a fully capable digital device.”

Experts note that this innovation could establish a new standard for emergency and digital communications in India, particularly for regions previously considered inaccessible.

BSNL launched the Satellite-to-Device (S2D) service in November 2024, opening the technology to ordinary consumers. The phone now delivers not only voice connectivity but also internet access and digital payment capabilities.
