Patna/Dhanbad, August 28, 2024 – The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) made a significant breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to tackle corruption within the government, with the arrest of Santosh Kumar, the Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Patna and Dhanbad), along with four other individuals. The arrests were made in connection with an alleged bribery case involving a sum of Rs 10 lakh.
According to officials, the CBI registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on a complaint that Kumar had been demanding and accepting bribes from various income tax assessees under his jurisdiction. The bribes were allegedly solicited in exchange for providing undue benefits to these individuals, an action that constitutes a clear abuse of his official position.
The four individuals arrested alongside Kumar have been identified as Gurpal Singh, Rajiv Kumar, Ashok Chaurasia, and Pranay. They were apprehended during an illegal exchange of the Rs 10 lakh bribe, as part of the CBI’s operation.
A CBI spokesperson stated that several conduits were reportedly working on behalf of Kumar, facilitating the bribery and ensuring that his demands were met. This network of intermediaries is believed to have been instrumental in orchestrating the illicit transactions.
Following the arrests, the CBI conducted extensive searches at around 21 locations across Patna, Dhanbad, and Noida. These searches led to the recovery of incriminating documents and articles, which are expected to provide further evidence in the case. Sources say a vigilance enquiry will be launched against Santosh Kumar’s properties and assets.
The arrested individuals, including Kumar, are set to be produced before the Court of Special Judge, CBI Cases, Patna, on August 28, 2024. This development marks a significant step forward in the CBI’s ongoing crackdown on corruption within the Income Tax Department.
