Assistant Sub-Inspector Ends Life Over Shocking Bribery Allegations

Chandigarh: In a tragic turn of events, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) with Chandigarh Police took his own life following a sting operation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) at the Sector-26 police station. The operation was conducted after the CBI received a complaint from the sister of an accused, who claimed she was coerced into paying Rs 20,000 to dilute charges in an attempted murder case.

On the evening of the incident, the ASI was discovered unconscious in a parked car at the Sector 41/42 dividing road. The police received information at 6:15 PM and rushed him to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH) in Sector 16, where he was declared dead. It was later determined that he had consumed a poisonous substance.

The CBI’s sting operation was initiated based on the complaint that the ASI had demanded a bribe to manipulate charges in a serious criminal case. The accused, along with an accomplice, had been arrested on March 28 for stabbing a victim in the chest. Relevant sections of the Arms Act were also applied to the case.

Upon realizing he was trapped, the ASI fled from his office located on the first floor of the Sector 26 police station. Before leaving, he instructed another ASI, Satish, to hold the bribe amount in the station’s storehouse. Satish was detained for questioning but was later released without formal charges.

This incident highlights the severe consequences of corruption within the police force and the tragic outcomes that can result from such malpractices. The ASI’s desperate act points to the need for stringent measures and reforms to tackle corruption and restore public trust in law enforcement agencies.
