Sixteen months after losing his entire life savings in a luxury car scam, Hawaii resident Alan Sue has been fully refunded, following a joint effort by investigative journalists and law enforcement agencies.

In April 2024, Sue wired $275,000 (Rs. 2.4 Crores) to Hollywood-based dealership Dream Auto Collection for what he believed was a rare, customized 2023 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon outfitted with a high-end Brabus appearance and performance package. The SUV never arrived, and the dealership ceased all communication.

Sue, who lives over 6,500 miles away in Hawaii, had saved the funds for his granddaughter’s college tuition. The emotional toll was devastating, leaving him in a deep state of despair.

Investigation Uncovers Pattern of Fraud

Sue’s case took a turn when he discovered a report by Investigator Jeff Weinsier on a Georgia couple scammed in a similar manner by the same dealership. His outreach triggered a series of inquiries that involved the Hollywood Police Department, the FBI, and state licensing authorities.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles swiftly revoked Dream Auto’s license. Federal agents later arrested dealership owner Vitalii Stefurac at an airport while he attempted to board a flight to Russia. He now faces conspiracy to commit wire fraud charges.

Refund Restores Hope

In a surprising turn, Sue recently received the full $275,000 (Rs. 2.4 Crores) back in his bank account. Sue expressed gratitude to journalists and investigators and stated that he never thought he would see the money ever again.

Investigators later learned that the G-Wagon Sue had purchased was sold to someone else in Chicago and that the Brabus package advertised online was entirely fake. While Sue still dreams of owning a G-Wagon, he says the ordeal has permanently altered his trust in others.
