Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s political landscape has once again been shaken by allegations surrounding a major “cash-for-jobs” scandal. The state’s Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has registered a First Information Report (FIR) against former minister K. N. Nehru in connection with alleged irregularities in recruitment under the Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) Department. The case revolves around claims that government jobs were secured through the payment of large bribes and that the recruitment process was manipulated to favor certain candidates.
The latest development comes after the state government informed the Madras High Court that an FIR had been registered based on available evidence and legal opinion. Investigators believe the matter extends beyond routine recruitment irregularities and may involve organized corruption and abuse of official influence during the hiring process.
Scale of Irregularities and Bribe Allegations
Earlier investigations by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) alleged widespread irregularities in appointments made within the MAWS Department. According to the agency, recruitment to 2,538 posts came under scrutiny after claims surfaced that candidates were asked to pay substantial sums of money in exchange for appointments. Investigators have alleged that bribes ranging from ₹25 lakh to ₹35 lakh were demanded for certain positions.
Documents submitted by the ED to state authorities reportedly suggested that hundreds of crores of rupees were collected through the alleged recruitment racket. Recent reports indicate that investigators are examining allegations involving approximately ₹634 crore in suspected bribe payments. Some reports have further claimed that the overall scale of irregularities linked to recruitment, contract allocations, and related administrative decisions could be even larger.
Judicial Intervention and Political Fallout
The controversy gained momentum after evidence and documents collected by central agencies were forwarded to the state’s anti-corruption authorities. When no immediate criminal case was registered, the matter eventually reached the courts. The Madras High Court later emphasized the need for a formal investigation, observing that the material placed before it appeared sufficient to warrant a probe into cognizable offences. The court noted that the documents presented were not mere allegations but records that required thorough examination by investigative agencies.
Opposition parties have repeatedly accused the government of compromising transparency in public-sector recruitment. Critics argue that if appointments were indeed secured through bribery, deserving candidates may have been unfairly deprived of employment opportunities. However, these allegations have not yet been proven in a court of law, and the investigation remains ongoing.
For his part, K. N. Nehru has consistently denied all wrongdoing. The senior politician has maintained that the recruitment process was conducted in accordance with applicable rules and regulations and has described the allegations against him as politically motivated. He has previously stated that he is prepared to face legal proceedings and has expressed confidence in the judicial system.
