UNNAO: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday inaugurated the country’s first private artificial intelligence-augmented multidisciplinary university in Unnao, established by Chandigarh University. The institution marks a pivotal addition to the state’s ambitious roadmap to integrate AI into governance, education, agriculture, and security systems.
The university is designed to support the state’s AI Pragya scheme, which aims to train 10 lakh individuals in AI and emerging technologies. The initiative targets 1.5 lakh beneficiaries monthly, including students, farmers, teachers, government staff, and village heads. Training will be conducted in partnership with major tech companies, including Microsoft, Intel, Google, and Guvi.
AI for Safety, Surveillance, and Governance
Uttar Pradesh is already deploying artificial intelligence in public safety systems. Under the Safe City Project, 17 city corporations have adopted AI-driven tools, including facial recognition cameras, automatic number plate recognition systems, SOS alert infrastructure, and real-time analytics dashboards. These are directly integrated with police control rooms, allowing for quicker response and predictive surveillance.
In the state’s prison system, an AI-powered platform named Jarvis has been introduced across 70 jails. It uses behavioural analytics and real-time video to monitor inmate activity, aiming to improve prison security and reduce violent incidents.
The Geology and Mining Department uses AI and IoT to supervise excavation sites, detect irregular activities, and improve environmental compliance. These tools enable live tracking of mineral movements and help curb illegal mining.

Transforming Rural Economy Through AI
The Rs 4,000 crore UP-AGRIS project, supported by the World Bank, uses artificial intelligence to revamp agriculture across the state. The programme benefits over 10 lakh farmers by introducing smart irrigation systems, drone-assisted land mapping, AI-enabled pest control, and data-driven crop planning.
The initiative has connected 10,000 women’s groups and farmer-producer organisations (FPOs) to digital supply chains and e-commerce platforms, opening new avenues for income generation. Meanwhile, AI tools in the Revenue Department are being used for land digitisation, village mapping, and more transparent property allocation.
With this multipronged AI integration, Uttar Pradesh is developing a blueprint for AI-powered public policy, positioning itself as a leader in India’s tech-driven governance model.
