New York: In a major crackdown on illegal arms trafficking, US law enforcement agencies have dismantled an international firearms smuggling operation and arrested three individuals, including a Pakistani national. Authorities seized a total of 89 firearms during a coordinated interception in New York, exposing what officials describe as a cross-border weapons trafficking network allegedly moving arms toward Canada.
According to the US Department of Justice, federal authorities in the Southern District of New York filed a criminal complaint against Malik Bromfield, Faizan Ali, and Kamal Salman on May 8, 2026, following a large-scale interdiction operation conducted in Sullivan County. The trio faces multiple felony charges, including unlicensed firearms dealing, fraudulent export of goods, possession of stolen firearms, and possession of unregistered short-barreled rifles.

Traffic Stop Exposes Weapons Cache
The investigation began on May 7, 2026, when New York State Police stopped a white Ford Explorer travelling on State Route 17 near Liberty. Officers initiated the stop after observing multiple traffic violations involving the vehicle, which carried North Carolina registration plates.
During questioning, investigators noticed inconsistencies in the statements of the occupants. The driver, Bromfield, claimed the group was travelling from New York City to Syracuse, while passengers Ali and Salman gave conflicting accounts, stating they had travelled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. These discrepancies raised suspicion and led to further inspection.
A critical breakthrough came when a search of Faizan Ali revealed an expired Pakistani National Driving Permit belonging to an Afghan national hidden on his person. This discovery escalated concerns about identity misuse and possible transnational links.
Authorities deployed a canine unit, which alerted officers to possible narcotics near the front passenger door. This prompted a deeper search of the vehicle under federal authorization. What followed was the discovery of a significant cache of weapons concealed inside the SUV and multiple pieces of luggage.
Stolen Guns and Unregistered Rifles Recovered
In total, investigators recovered 89 firearms, including 17 weapons previously reported stolen from Florida and Texas. Two short-barreled rifles manufactured by Anderson and Smith & Wesson were also found, neither of which was registered in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Record, making their possession illegal under US federal law.
Officials stated that firearms were packed inside an unusually heavy suitcase placed in the rear of the vehicle, indicating organized concealment and transportation methods consistent with smuggling operations.
Investigators believe the group may have been part of a larger international smuggling network. A GPS application found on Bromfield’s seized mobile phone was reportedly set to an address in Hammond, New York, located near the Canadian border across the St. Lawrence River.
Authorities also recovered approximately $3,000 in cash in $100 bills from the vehicle’s glove compartment. Officials are examining whether the funds were connected to payment for trafficking operations or logistics support.
Canada-Bound Route Under Investigation
Law enforcement sources indicated that Bromfield and Ali are foreign nationals, while Salman holds US citizenship but was reportedly travelling on a Canadian passport. Ali is also said to be wanted in Canada on outstanding warrants related to methamphetamine trafficking and a fatal road accident case.
The accused have been charged with multiple federal offences, including conspiracy, illegal firearms dealing, and possession of stolen and unregistered weapons. Investigators confirmed that none of the suspects held the required federal licences to deal in or export firearms.
Authorities are now tracing financial records, communication data, and digital evidence recovered from seized mobile devices to determine the extent of the alleged trafficking network. Officials suspect the operation may involve additional actors across multiple jurisdictions.
US authorities have stated that further arrests are possible as the investigation expands, and international cooperation with Canadian agencies is expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
The trio remains in federal custody as proceedings continue in the Southern District of New York.
