Navpreet Singh, allegedly linked to an international drug trafficking network, has been deported to India from Türkiye. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the development on Saturday, describing it as a “historic milestone” in the government’s campaign against narcotics. According to information released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Navpreet Singh had allegedly used the identity ‘Navab Virk’ in Türkiye and obtained citizenship under that identity.

He was allegedly involved in a network trafficking heroin and methamphetamine from Afghanistan to India while operating under the assumed identity.

How Was His Real Identity Traced?

According to Amit Shah, Indian agencies tracked Navpreet Singh’s activities and, after a multi-level investigation, established his actual identity. International cooperation and the relevant legal process were subsequently used to facilitate his return from Türkiye to India.

After arriving in India, he was taken into custody and sent to jail in connection with alleged drug trafficking and other criminal cases.

What Was the Alleged Drug Network?

Investigating agencies have alleged that Navpreet Singh was connected to an international network involved in transporting narcotics from Afghanistan to India. The alleged network included the trafficking of heroin and methamphetamine, both classified as serious narcotic substances.

His alleged use of a false identity while living abroad became an important part of the investigation, as it enabled him to remain outside the reach of Indian agencies for an extended period.

Who Else Was Linked to the Network?

Action has also previously been taken against individuals allegedly linked to Navpreet Singh’s network. In May 2026, his alleged associate Prabhdeep Singh was brought to India from Azerbaijan. His name had surfaced in a case involving the seizure of 358 kg of heroin.

According to details linked to the investigation, Prabhdeep Singh was allegedly responsible for handling parts of Navpreet Singh’s drug operation in India.

How Was He Brought Back to India?

India and Türkiye have mechanisms for cooperation in cases involving international crime and the return of accused persons through applicable legal procedures. Such cases generally involve coordination between agencies, verification of the accused person’s identity, exchange of information and completion of the relevant legal formalities.

In Navpreet Singh’s case, Indian agencies’ identification of his alleged assumed identity and his subsequent return to India formed part of the international cooperation process.

What Did Amit Shah Say?

Amit Shah congratulated the agencies involved in the operation. In a post on X, he reiterated the government’s stated commitment to eliminating all narco-cartels from the country before December 2029. This is a declared government objective, while the outcome of individual cases will depend on further investigation, prosecution and judicial proceedings.

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, between 2019 and August 2026, the Indian government brought back 288 fugitives from 36 countries. Navpreet Singh’s return from Türkiye is being viewed in the context of broader international cooperation aimed at bringing accused persons hiding overseas back to India. However, the allegations against Navpreet Singh will remain subject to the ongoing legal process, and any final determination of guilt will depend on the outcome of the relevant investigations and judicial proceedings.
