Mathura. A major jewellery theft in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura has posed a significant challenge for police. More than 10 kilograms of gold, including gold jewellery and gold biscuits, were allegedly stolen from a jewellery shop in the Kosi Kalan area. The stolen gold and jewellery are estimated to be worth around ₹14 crore. Approximately ₹15 lakh in cash was also reported missing from the shop. Preliminary investigation suggests that the masked burglar remained inside the shop for nearly eight hours and used a key to open the safe in the strong room. After committing the theft, the accused also took away the shop’s digital video recorder.
According to police, the incident took place between around 9:30 p.m. on Sunday and 5:30 a.m. on Monday. Dressed in black clothes and wearing a mask, the accused reportedly reached the roof through the boundary wall of a neighbouring house. He then crossed several interconnected rooftops before reaching the roof of the jewellery shop. After reaching the shop’s roof, he cut through an iron grill installed to keep monkeys away using a gas cutter and entered the premises.

Thief Remained Inside the Shop for Nearly Eight Hours
After entering the shop, the accused reportedly spent several hours inside. When the shop was opened on Monday morning, the owner checked the premises and found that the gold and other valuables kept in the iron safe were missing. Police were subsequently informed. Preliminary assessment indicates that more than 10 kilograms of gold and jewellery were stolen, with their value estimated at around ₹14 crore. Approximately ₹15 lakh in cash was also reported stolen.
Investigators found that the accused did not touch the silver jewellery or artificial jewellery kept inside the shop. Instead, he specifically targeted gold jewellery, gold biscuits and cash. This has led police to suspect that the accused may have had prior information about the valuable items kept inside the premises.
Reached the Room Where the Keys Were Kept
According to police, after entering the shop, the accused went directly to the room where the keys to the strong room were kept. After obtaining the key, he opened the safe and removed the gold stored inside. The manner in which the crime was carried out has raised suspicion that the accused may have had prior knowledge of the shop’s internal layout and security arrangements.
Police are investigating how the accused knew where the keys were kept and how he was aware of the internal arrangement of the shop. This aspect is being treated as an important part of the investigation.
Accused Also Took Away the Shop’s DVR
After carrying out the theft, the accused also took away the shop’s digital video recorder, or DVR. As a result, investigators could not access the CCTV footage recorded inside the shop. Police are now examining CCTV cameras installed outside the shop, at nearby establishments and along surrounding routes.
Investigators are also trying to determine whether the accused entered the shop alone or was assisted by others. CCTV footage from outside the premises is being examined to establish his movements before and after the crime.
Role of Former Employee Also Under Investigation
Given the scale of the theft and the manner in which it was carried out, police suspect that an insider may have been involved. Investigators are collecting information about current and former employees of the jewellery shop. The possible role of a former employee is also being examined.
Police are checking who had access to the shop’s keys, strong room, safe and security arrangements. However, no individual has been officially declared an accused at this stage, and all possible angles are being investigated.
Thief Escaped Through the Same Route
According to police, after stealing the valuables, the accused returned to the roof of the shop and then went back to the neighbouring building’s roof through the same route used to enter the premises. He subsequently climbed down into the neighbouring property and left through its main gate.
Police are now examining evidence collected from the crime scene, CCTV footage from surrounding areas and the activities of suspects to identify those involved. Teams are also working to recover the stolen gold and cash and establish the full sequence of events behind the alleged theft.
