Mumbai: To combat the online glorification of notorious criminals, the Maharashtra State Cyber Department has filed an FIR against several e-commerce platforms, including Flipkart, AliExpress, TeeShopper, and Etsy. These platforms were found to be selling T-shirts that glorified gangsters like Lawrence Bishnoi and Dawood Ibrahim.

The Cyber Department, responsible for cybersecurity and cybercrime in Maharashtra, actively monitors the digital landscape to identify and address content that could potentially disturb public order. A recent sweep uncovered the sale of these objectionable items on popular online marketplaces.

The department expressed concern that such merchandise could promote a distorted and dangerous image of criminals, particularly among impressionable youth. They emphasized that glorifying criminal figures could normalize violence and crime, eroding societal values.

The FIR was filed under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act, targeting both the sellers and the platforms. The Cyber Department highlighted the potential for such merchandise to corrupt young minds and trivialize serious crimes.

This action by the Maharashtra State Cyber Department sends a strong message that the glorification of crime, whether intentional or unintentional, will not be tolerated. The department aims to maintain a safe and secure digital environment and prevent the proliferation of harmful content.

This incident serves as a reminder for e-commerce platforms to exercise greater vigilance and ensure that their platforms are not used to promote or glorify illegal activities.
