A 72-year-old man from Pune has become one of the biggest victims of a bogus share trading scam in Maharashtra. He lost over ₹190 crore after being lured into a fake online share trading platform. This case highlights the growing threat cybercriminals pose, especially to senior citizens, using elaborate schemes that seem legitimate.
How the Scam Worked
The fraudsters contacted the elderly man, promising huge returns through share trading on their digital platform. Initially, the victim trusted them and began investing large sums. However, as time passed, he realized that the entire trading platform was fake. The scammers created this platform to siphon off money through multiple transactions.
The victim discovered the scam only when he tried withdrawing money and received no response from the fraudsters. At that point, he approached the Pune cybercrime cell and lodged a formal complaint.
Investigation and Legal Action
Authorities swiftly registered a case and started a thorough investigation. The cybercrime team is tracing the digital footprints left by the scammers, including bank accounts and fake websites. These efforts aim to identify and apprehend the criminals behind the massive fraud.
Additionally, police are working to recover the lost funds and prevent similar crimes in the future. The ongoing probe sends a warning to others to stay alert.

Warning for the Public and Experts’ Advice
Experts warn that cybercriminals increasingly target elderly and vulnerable people by designing fake apps, websites, and trading platforms. They advise seniors to verify investment opportunities thoroughly and avoid sharing sensitive information online.
Authorities urge citizens to report suspicious calls or investment proposals promptly. Educating family members about online safety is equally important to protect them from falling prey to scams.
Steps Being Taken
The Pune cybercrime cell is also working on public awareness campaigns. These efforts help improve digital literacy and safeguard citizens from such sophisticated financial fraud.
