The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has submitted a 40,000-page chargesheet against former cabinet minister Bikramjit Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, alleging that ten shell companies were established to park and route illicit money. The chargesheet claims that these entities were tied to the former minister’s relatives, with a staggering Rs 686.15 crore routed through the bank accounts of two specific firms. In addition to extensive domestic transactions, investigators reported that one company received substantial overseas deposits. An FIR was registered against Majithia on June 25, 2025, focusing on a ten-year check period spanning March 2, 2007, to March 31, 2017, an era when the Shiromani Akali Dal held power in Punjab and Majithia served as a cabinet minister.

Vigilance Revises Disproportionate Assets Estimate to 1,495 Percent

In its initial findings, the Vigilance Bureau had stated that Majithia accumulated approximately Rs 40.78 crore in assets beyond his known sources of income, an amount that stood at 1,200.13 percent over his legitimate earnings. Following a deeper probe and an examination of additional financial trails, the bureau revised this figure sharply upward in the chargesheet, claiming his assets were 1,495.37 percent disproportionate to his known income. Investigators have tied this alleged asset expansion to the involvement of Harpreet Singh Gulati, who has been named alongside Majithia’s brother-in-law Gajpat Singh Grewal as an accused in the case. The agency contends that these individuals worked in tandem to establish firms and corporate structures aimed at laundering undeclared wealth.

Ten Shell Entities Named Alongside Massive Inflows in Saraya Industries

The chargesheet specifically lists ten business entities identified during the evidentiary phase of the inquiry. These include Saraya Industries Private Limited, Peregrine Saraya Organics Private Limited, SD Beverages Private Limited, A to Z Transport alias Patiala Express, AD Enterprises, Harpreet Gulati HUF under the name United Wines, Akash Enterprises headed by sole proprietor Harpreet Singh Gulati, UW Enterprises Private Limited, AD Enterprises Private Limited, and Akash Spirit Private Limited. A benami investment was also detected in Saraya Aviation Limited. Detailed records of Saraya Industries Limited reveal that between 2007 and 2009, an extra Rs 170.39 crore was deposited into its bank accounts, alongside Rs 176.56 crore gained as undue benefit from foreign institutions. Later, between 2012 and 2014, an additional Rs 127.90 crore was deposited into the same company, which also logged an unexplained increase of Rs 194.62 crore in immovable assets, while Nawanshahr Power Private Limited secured an unusual gain of Rs 16.68 crore from the Syndicatum Group.

Political Sparring Intensifies as Majithia Questions Court Versus Public Rhetoric

Addressing the allegations, Majithia pointed out a clear disparity between the arguments presented by the government counsel inside the courtroom and the claims circulated publicly by Aam Aadmi Party leaders. He asserted that it is improper to link a disproportionate assets inquiry to narcotics smuggling, adding that the mere mention of a company name or financial figure does not establish guilt or prove a criminal act. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann countered that Majithia would find it difficult to escape accountability, stating that individuals who maligned Punjab by linking it with drugs must face consequences for their actions. Mann also took aim at the Akali leadership, asserting that leaders disconnected from the regional language and grassroots realities of Punjab can no longer effectively represent the public interest.
