The Jammu and Kashmir Police has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against cyber fraud, particularly mobile network manipulation and SIM swap scams, amid growing concerns over online financial crimes. The advisory asks people to take immediate action if they notice suspicious activity affecting their mobile connections and to follow basic cyber safety practices to protect their personal and financial information.
Police Warn of SIM Swap Fraud Risks
According to the advisory, mobile users should immediately contact their telecom service provider if their mobile network suddenly stops functioning, as this could indicate an attempted SIM swap or other fraudulent activity.
Police warned that SIM replacement scams are a common method used by cybercriminals to gain unauthorised access to bank accounts and sensitive personal information. Citizens have been urged to report any suspicious requests relating to SIM replacement without delay.
Public Urged to Protect Financial Information
The advisory cautioned people against sharing One-Time Passwords (OTPs), banking credentials or personal information with unknown callers or through unverified links. Citizens have also been advised to regularly monitor their bank accounts and account activity to detect any unauthorised transactions at the earliest.
Police further advised victims of cyber fraud to report incidents immediately by calling the national cyber helpline at 1930 or by lodging a complaint through the cybercrime.gov.in portal.
Awareness and Timely Reporting Emphasised
The advisory comes amid a reported rise in digital fraud cases across the Union Territory. Police stressed that public awareness, prompt reporting and adherence to basic cyber safety measures are essential to preventing financial losses and tackling cybercrime effectively.
The advisory also appealed to citizens to spread awareness among family members and neighbours so that collective vigilance can help strengthen protection against online fraud and emerging cyber threats.
