Lucknow: In a shocking revelation, a large and organised illegal organ trafficking network has been uncovered in Uttar Pradesh, raising serious questions over the integrity of the healthcare system and regulatory oversight. Investigating agencies have arrested nine accused so far, while several doctors, technicians and middlemen involved in the racket are still absconding. The network was primarily operated from Kanpur and had links extending across four major cities—Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut.
Over 50 Kidney Transplants, Crores Charged per Surgery
According to the investigation, more than 50 illegal kidney transplants were carried out under this network. Patients were allegedly charged between ₹50 lakh and ₹2.5 crore for each surgery, while donors were paid ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh. In several cases, donors were reportedly underpaid compared to what had been promised, which ultimately led to the exposure of the racket.
The case came to light after a victim from Bihar filed a complaint, alleging that he had been lured into donating his kidney with false promises of payment, which were not fulfilled. Following the complaint, authorities initiated a probe that gradually unraveled a well-structured and long-running criminal network engaged in illegal transplant activities.
Hospital Turned Nerve Centre of Illegal Activities
Investigators revealed a highly secretive and meticulously planned modus operandi. The doctors involved in the racket were referred to as “flying surgeons,” as they would discreetly travel from different cities, arrive at the hospital late at night, conduct surgeries, and leave before dawn. Most operations were performed between 3 am and 4 am to avoid detection.
A private hospital in Kanpur served as the central hub of this illegal operation. It has been alleged that prior to the surgeries, CCTV cameras were switched off and most hospital staff were either sent on leave or kept away from the operation theatre. No official entry or exit records were maintained, making it nearly impossible to trace activities through standard logs.

Digital Evidence Reveals Well-Coordinated Network
Investigators also examined CCTV footage from surrounding areas, which showed suspicious late-night movement of ambulances and vehicles. Additionally, mobile phones seized from the accused contained Telegram chats, audio messages and video clips, providing crucial evidence of coordination between donors, patients and intermediaries. These digital trails confirmed the existence of a well-organised network facilitating illegal transplants.
Apart from doctors, the network included lab technicians, drivers, hospital management staff and middlemen. The middlemen played a key role in identifying and connecting donors with recipients, while hospital authorities ensured smooth execution of surgeries. Some of the accused were reportedly hospital owners or held administrative positions, allegedly providing protection and logistical support to the illegal operations.
Records Manipulated to Erase Transplant Trail
Further investigation revealed that after surgeries, patients were shifted to other hospitals where either no records were maintained or documents were manipulated. This effectively erased the traceability of the transplant procedures, making it difficult for authorities to track the origin and legality of the operations.
Officials stated that this was not an isolated case but part of a larger organised black-market network dealing in human organs. Doctors involved operated like contractors—travelling across cities, performing surgeries and leaving immediately. Each surgery reportedly earned them ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh.
Probe Expands, More Revelations Expected
The investigation team has conducted multiple raids at suspected locations, and the main hospital involved has been sealed to prevent further illegal activities. Several teams have been deployed to track down absconding accused, with continuous raids being carried out at their possible hideouts.
The health department has also taken serious note of the case and initiated verification of the qualifications and licenses of the doctors involved. If it is established that unqualified individuals performed surgeries, the gravity of the crime will increase significantly.
As the probe continues, authorities are closely examining financial transactions, associated hospitals and other possible links within the network. Officials believe that more shocking revelations may emerge in the coming days, potentially exposing the full extent of this organised organ trafficking syndicate.
