Google has restricted Meta’s access to its Gemini artificial intelligence models after the Facebook parent company sought more computing capacity than Google could provide. The reported capacity constraints are said to have affected Meta’s internal AI projects and highlight growing pressure on computing resources as demand for advanced AI models continues to rise.
Capacity Constraints Affect Meta’s AI Plans
According to the report, Google informed Meta around March that it could not supply the full Gemini computing capacity the company wanted to purchase. The shortfall reportedly disrupted and delayed some of Meta’s internal AI initiatives.
The report also said other Google customers experienced similar constraints, although to a lesser extent. Meta was described as being particularly affected because of its exceptionally high demand for Google’s AI models.

Google Cloud generated $20 billion in revenue during the quarter ended March. However, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said ongoing computing power constraints prevented even stronger growth.
The reported restrictions have prompted Meta to encourage employees to use AI tokens more efficiently. AI tokens are the units used to measure AI usage, according to the report.
