New Delhi: Delving into emerging forensic frontiers on the second afternoon of the FutureCrime Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam, experts, law enforcement leadership, and technical specialists assembled for Panel 13. Titled “The Next Evidence Frontier: Cloud, Drone, IoT, Vehicle and Location Forensics,” the session examined the rapid transformation of digital evidence gathering across connected ecosystems, autonomous systems, and modern transport networks.

Moderated by Dr. Kulbhushan Upadhyay, Assistant General Manager at Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd., the discussion addressed data fragmentation, physical crash reconstruction, and the critical need to standardize forensic workflows.

Evolving Multi-Device Ecosystems and Panel Direction

The transition from single-device computer forensics to distributed multi-domain evidence extraction represents a fundamental shift in criminal investigations. As electronic footprints expand across cloud repositories, vehicular telematics, autonomous drones, and ambient IoT sensors, investigative frameworks must establish unified, court-admissible standards to process fragmented telemetry streams.

Comprehensive Perspectives Across Cloud, Automotive, Drones, and Ambient IoT

Ranjeet Mishra, CEO of the Centre of Excellence for Cybersecurity – Karnataka (CySecK), highlighted speed and data fragmentation as the primary operational challenges confronting modern cyber investigators. He explained that synthesizing disparate, high-volume data streams from heterogeneous cloud environments, mobile devices, and network logs into legally admissible formats remains highly complex. To bridge the gap between academic innovation and field-level police operations, Mishra emphasized that CySecK is actively formulating standardized forensic frameworks and conducting continuous skill-building programs for personnel across state police forces and the armed services.

Deepak Vatsa, Senior Vice President of Fraud Control at HDFC ERGO, detailed key advances in location-based forensics and automotive intelligence, noting that digital evidence sources like Google cell tower logs are gaining widespread judicial recognition in courtrooms. He showcased major breakthroughs in vehicular forensic analysis driven by Electronic Control Modules (ECMs) and onboard telematics systems. Vatsa explained that extracting modern vehicle telemetry allows forensic crash reconstruction experts to analyze pre-impact speeds, braking patterns, and factual collision scenarios with scientific precision, displacing reliance on subjective driver testimony.

Col. Ankush Goyal addressed hardware forensics through the lens of military intelligence and national defense, emphasizing that systematic evidence collection directly protects national security perimeters. He observed that many commercial innovations originate from tactical warfare requirements, pointing to the increasing threat posed by the hostile deployment of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Col. Goyal detailed that while consumer-grade drones yield easily accessible flight logs and GPS coordinates stored on Micro SD cards, military-grade drones require advanced chip-off forensics and reverse-engineering to trace takeoff origins, flight paths, and operational intent, noting that military hubs like the Center of Excellence at Mhow rely on “whole-of-nation” academic partnerships to maintain tactical superiority.

Abhinav Saurabh explored the investigative utility of ambient data captured across interconnected Internet of Things (IoT) device networks. He explained how ambient sensors in smart home environments continuously log local interaction indicators, keyword prompts, and device state changes even while operating in offline modes. Saurabh demonstrated that harvesting these localized telemetry logs provides forensic investigators with critical timeline indicators and environmental context necessary to corroborate witness statements and reconstruct crime scenes.

Former DGP Abhinav Kumar (Uttarakhand) brought a high-level police administrative perspective to the discussion, reinforcing that law enforcement agencies must systematically adapt their organizational workflows to handle multi-device evidence ecosystems. He noted that modern criminal justice demands that frontline officers and specialized investigation units receive continuous training on cross-domain evidence acquisition, ensuring that evidence gathered from emerging technologies withstands rigorous scrutiny during judicial trials.
