The Andhra Pradesh Police have arrested senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer PSR Anjaneyulu in connection with the alleged wrongful arrest and harassment of a Mumbai-based actor.

The 1992-batch officer, who previously served as the intelligence chief under the YSR Congress Party-led government, was taken into custody in Hyderabad and is being transported to Vijayawada for further legal proceedings.

Anjaneyulu was already under suspension following serious allegations made by the actor, who claimed she was wrongfully detained last year under politically motivated charges.

The actor, whose identity remains confidential, had earlier accused police officials of forcibly arresting her and pressuring her to withdraw a sexual assault case filed against a high-ranking executive of a Mumbai-based corporation.

The incident occurred during the tenure of the previous government, when the actor and her elderly parents were arrested based on a cheating complaint related to a land dispute, allegedly filed by Kukkala Vidyasagar, a leader from the then-ruling YSRCP. According to the complaint, the arrest was executed on instructions reportedly issued by Anjaneyulu.

Following a change in administration, the actor lodged a formal complaint accusing the officers of conspiring with Vidyasagar to target and defame her. She alleged that the forgery case against her was fabricated, and that she and her parents were subjected to severe mental and physical harassment, including over 40 days in judicial custody without proper notice or due process.

In response to these allegations, the state government in September suspended three senior police officers — PSR Anjaneyulu, former Vijayawada Police Commissioner Kranti Rana Tata, and then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Vijayawada) Vishal Gunni.

The accused officers face charges of abusing their authority, failing to follow procedural protocols, and acting under political pressure. Anjaneyulu is specifically accused of misusing his position to influence the case, while Tata allegedly issued arrest orders without proper documentation, relying solely on oral instructions. Vishal Gunni, meanwhile, has been blamed for inadequate scrutiny of the original complaint before proceeding with the arrest.
