Delhi Police Files FIR Against Twitter For Having Child Porn On Site: NCPCR
NEW DELHI: Delhi Police Cyber Cell informed the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) on Tuesday that the Delhi Police had filed a FIR against Twitter.
The FIR was lodged in response to a complaint made by NCPCR, which claimed that child pornographic videos and links were available on the microblogging site.
“DCP Cyber Cell today submitted to the commission that a FIR has been registered against Twitter for the Child pornographic content available on the micro-blogging service,” NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanoongo stated.
The NCPCR had already written to Delhi Police requesting that a FIR be filed against Twitter for deceiving the panel; however, because no action had been done, the Child Rights body decided to summon the DCP Cyber Cell.
The Children’s Rights Commission had earlier summoned Twitter in response to a report that multiple connections to child porn and the dark web were available on Twitter.
Twitter, on the other hand, stated in its response that Twitter India and Twitter Inc are two separate entities, and that the former has no influence over content on the platform.
However, additional examination by the commission revealed that Twitter Inc controls 99 percent of Twitter India’s shares.
When the Commission learned of this, it requested that the Delhi Police file a FIR against Twitter for misleading the Commission, and it also requested that the Ministry of Information and Technology suspend children’s access to the website until Twitter begins to highlight complaints of sexual harassment of children to the government of India.
“With regard to Twitter misleading the Commission, the Delhi Police will file an Action Taken Report, following which we will approach the Court and request that action be taken against Twitter,” Kanoogo added.
Meanwhile, responding to queries, Delhi Police said it has registered a case under POCSO Act and IT Act against Twitter on the basis of a complaint from NCPCR citing the availability of links/ material pertaining to child exploitation. The complaint is against Twitter Inc and Twitter Communication India Private Ltd.
