Cyber Trafficking Accused Dies in Custody; Judicial Inquiry Ordered

Telangana: A man accused of trafficking unemployed youths from Telangana to Southeast Asian countries under false job promises died of a heart attack while in police custody. Authorities have ordered a judicial inquiry to ensure transparency and adherence to legal protocols.
The accused, Alakunta Sampath, had been arrested for allegedly luring individuals to Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos and forcing them into cyber slavery. He was booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), IT Act, and Emigration Act. After his initial judicial remand, Sampath was placed in police custody for further interrogation.
Judicial Inquiry and Legal Proceedings
Following his death, an FIR was registered under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). A senior-ranking officer is overseeing the case, while a magistrate-led judicial inquiry is underway. Additionally, a three-member forensic team has been assigned to conduct the autopsy, and the Human Rights Commission has been notified.

Interrogation and Mobile Phone Recovery
During questioning, Sampath reportedly confessed to his involvement in the cyber trafficking network. He disclosed the location of two hidden mobile phones, which were later recovered by the police. Officials confirmed that the recovery process was conducted in broad daylight, in the presence of mediators, and was fully documented.
Medical Emergency and Death
After being brought back to the police station, Sampath complained of fatigue and pain in his left hand. He was immediately taken to a hospital, where CCTV footage showed him walking in unassisted. However, approximately an hour later, he suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed.
Police Assure Transparency
Authorities have emphasized that a fair and transparent investigation will be conducted. “The investigation will adhere to all established legal protocols to ensure fairness,” officials stated. With a judicial inquiry, forensic examination, and oversight from senior officials, authorities seek to ensure that due process is followed in Sampath’s custodial death case.
