Cyber Criminals Arrested For Creating Fake Websites Of Big Bazaar, D-Mart, and Big Basket

NOIDA: Noida police have recently arrested six individuals belonging to a cyber gang involved in creating fake websites for companies like Big Bazaar, D-Mart, and Big Basket. The gang created these websites and offered fake discounts and deals to unsuspecting buyers. The buyers were tricked into making purchases and paying online through these fake websites, thereby revealing their credit and debit card information to the scammers.

According to Additional DCP (Central Noida) Rajeev Dixit, the cyber helpline team of Gautam Buddh Nagar police arrested these six members of the gang on April 3. They have been identified as Vineet Kumar, Dhruv Solanki, Gaurav Talan, Salman Khan, Santosh Maurya, and Manoj Maurya. The accused are from Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddh Nagar and have duped people not only from the Delhi NCR area but also from several other parts of the country.

The police have seized three laptops, four mobile phones, two debit cards, Rs. 11,700 in cash, and a Hyundai i10 car from the gang. A case has been registered against the accused at the Bisrakh police station under Indian Penal Code sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act.

This incident highlights the increasing prevalence of fake website scams. Fraudsters create clones of original websites that look very similar to the real ones, making it difficult to tell them apart. Such scams are not limited to e-commerce sites; people have also fallen victim to fake travel websites or job scams where they are asked to do commission-based work.

The Noida police’s swift action against this cyber gang has highlighted the importance of being vigilant while using online platforms, particularly when making online payments. The public needs to be aware of the risks and take appropriate measures to avoid falling prey to such scams.

The problem of fake online shopping websites has been on the rise in recent years, with scammers using various tactics to dupe unsuspecting buyers into making purchases through fraudulent websites. The problem is not limited to just one region or country, as it is a global issue affecting people worldwide.

HOW TO SPOT FAKE ONLINE SHOPPING WEBSITES

To prevent falling victim to fake online shopping websites, there are several steps that individuals can take. Firstly, it is essential to double-check the domain name of the website before making any purchases. Fraudsters may change a URL name slightly or change the domain extension, so it is crucial to check the web address carefully.

Another crucial step is to look for a padlock symbol when visiting a website. The padlock indicates that the site is secured with a TLS/SSL certificate, which encrypts data sent between the user and the website. If the website hasn’t been issued a TLS/SSL certificate, an exclamation mark ( ! ) will appear to the left of the domain name in the address bar.

Individuals should also be wary of deals that seem too good to be true, as scammers often use these deals to lure unsuspecting buyers into making purchases through fake websites. Checking for poor spelling, design issues, and other red flags can also help individuals spot fake websites.

Verifying and reading online reviews and checking for reports of scams can also help individuals determine if a website is trustworthy before making any purchases or providing personal information.

Fake online shopping websites are a significant problem affecting people worldwide. However, taking steps such as double-checking the domain name, looking for a padlock symbol, being wary of deals that seem too good to be true, checking for poor spelling and design issues, and verifying online reviews can help individuals prevent falling victim to these scams.
