Through 2025, thousands of cyber-fraud cases were reported across almost every Indian state. In most instances, scammers relied on a few tried-and-tested methods — and managed to drain people’s bank accounts within minutes.
With the beginning of 2026, the Future Crime Research Foundation (FCRF) has urged citizens to stay alert and adopt strong “digital hygiene.” According to the foundation, today’s cybercriminals are more organized, sophisticated and tech-driven than ever.
Former IPS officer and cyber-crime expert Prof. Triveni Singh explains:
“Cyber criminals don’t start by scaring you — they start by earning your trust. The moment you see fear or greed being used, understand that the scam has already begun.”
Below are five common cyber scams — and what you can learn from them to stay safe in 2026.
Fake Investment Scam
This remains one of the fastest-growing frauds.
Victims are often added to WhatsApp/Telegram groups where so-called “advisors” promise high profits. Small returns are initially paid to build trust — and then, large sums disappear.
How to stay safe:
- Never trust investment links or closed groups
- Invest only through SEBI-registered advisors
- Don’t rely on screenshots, reviews, or hype
Parcel / Courier Scam (Gateway to Digital Arrest)
Victims receive a call claiming a parcel is booked in their name — containing “illegal documents,” drugs, or passports.
They are then connected to someone posing as police/customs officers and threatened with legal action until they transfer money.
How to stay safe:
- No legitimate agency demands money over calls
- Do not join “investigation” via random links/video calls
- Hang up and report immediately on 1930 or your local cyber helpline
Work-From-Home Job Scam
“Earn from home” — and the trap begins.
Fraudsters assign small tasks and credit tiny payments first. Later, they demand advance fees for “VIP tasks” — then vanish.
How to stay safe:
- Any job asking for upfront payment is a scam
- Verify company emails and official domains
- Avoid jobs offered only via WhatsApp/Telegram
Digital Arrest
One of the most talked-about scams of 2025.
Scammers pretend to be law-enforcement officials, claim you are “under investigation,” and force you to stay isolated on video calls for hours — while they empty your accounts.
How to stay safe:
- No officer can confine you over a phone call
- Legal notices come only through authorized channels
- Inform family, and seek legal help immediately
Voice-Cloning Scam
AI-driven voice cloning is emerging as a serious threat.
Criminals mimic the voice of a family member or friend, claim an emergency or kidnapping, and demand urgent transfers.
How to stay safe:
- Always verify through another call or video call
- Set a family “secret passphrase”
- Never transfer funds in panic
Stay Cyber-Safe in 2026
According to FCRF and Prof. Triveni Singh, cyber safety is built through daily habits:
- 1. Avoid unknown links and apps
- 2. Never share OTP, UPI PIN, or CVV
- 3. Report suspicious calls/messages — 1930
- 4. Enable two-factor authentication
- 5.Be skeptical of offers, rewards — and threats
