The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered a corruption and criminal conspiracy case against Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd and multiple public officials in connection with alleged financial irregularities in a ₹800 crore government infrastructure project.

The complaint, filed based on inputs from the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries, outlines suspected wrongdoing in the awarding of contracts and project execution under the Centre’s public sector modernization initiative. The case involves senior officials from Bridge and Roof Company (India) Ltd, a public sector undertaking, in collusion with representatives of Tata Consulting Engineers.

Allegations of Falsified Documentation and Unjustified Approvals

According to the CBI FIR, forged documents and fake endorsements were allegedly used to push inflated invoices and secure approvals for unjustified payments. The agency suspects that certain government employees received illegal gratification in return for facilitating the clearance of these contracts.

The ₹800 crore project, which was aimed at constructing or upgrading industrial infrastructure, now faces serious scrutiny. Investigators are combing through financial records, procurement processes, and correspondence between the firms and officials named in the FIR.

CBI sleuths have reportedly conducted searches at multiple locations including corporate offices and residences linked to key individuals. Digital devices and documents have been seized to aid the investigation.

Government Emphasizes Accountability

In a press briefing, officials from the Ministry of Heavy Industries reaffirmed their commitment to transparency and welcomed the CBI’s intervention. “This case highlights our zero-tolerance approach to corruption,” a ministry representative stated.

Tata Consulting Engineers Ltd has not issued a public response yet. However, sources familiar with the matter suggest the company may soon release a statement addressing the allegations.

Bridge and Roof Company, the nodal agency for executing the project, has been under the scanner in past audits for procedural delays and inefficiencies, though this is the first time direct corruption charges have surfaced at such a scale.

CBI’s investigation is ongoing and arrests may follow depending on findings during the forensic audit phase.
