Jaipur. A Special CBI Court in Jaipur has sentenced former Bank of Maharashtra branch manager Ram Bharos Meena to seven years of rigorous imprisonment in a ₹3.61 crore loan fraud case. The court also imposed a fine of ₹2.85 lakh on him. Private individual Makhan Lal Meena, who was convicted in the case, was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹25,000.

According to the CBI, Ram Bharos Meena was serving as the branch manager of Bank of Maharashtra’s Gopalpura Bypass branch in 2015. He was accused of sanctioning loans in 17 accounts between January 15, 2015 and May 6, 2015 without valid loan applications, required documents or adequate security. The bank alleged that the irregularities caused a wrongful loss of ₹3.61 crore.

The CBI registered the case on November 9, 2016, based on a written complaint submitted by the bank’s Jaipur Zonal Office on June 3, 2016. The complaint alleged that the then branch manager abused his official position by violating prescribed procedures while sanctioning the loans and resorting to fraud and forgery.

During the investigation, the CBI examined bank records, loan accounts and related documents. After completing the probe, the agency filed a charge sheet against Ram Bharos Meena and Makhan Lal Meena on July 9, 2020. The Special CBI Court framed charges against both accused on December 1, 2021.

After examining the evidence and statements presented during the trial, the court convicted both accused. The court subsequently pronounced the sentences on September 30. The former branch manager was awarded seven years of rigorous imprisonment along with a ₹2.85 lakh fine, while Makhan Lal Meena was sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹25,000.

According to the CBI, alleged irregularities in loan sanctioning and documentation resulted in substantial financial loss to the bank. During the investigation, the agency also examined whether the prescribed application, documentation and security requirements had been followed for the 17 loan accounts.

The verdict comes amid other recent banking fraud convictions before the Special CBI Court in Jaipur. Last month, the court sentenced three bank employees to seven years each of rigorous imprisonment in a case involving the alleged unauthorised release of mortgaged securities and a loss of more than ₹12 lakh to Oriental Bank of Commerce.

In that case, the convicted employees were then Branch Manager Ramji Lal Meena, Special Assistant Murari Lal Meena and Peon-cum-Housekeeper Than Singh Lashkar of the Sheosinghpura branch in Lalsot, Dausa. The court imposed a fine of ₹85,000 on each of them. The CBI had registered that case on February 1, 2019, based on a complaint filed by the then Deputy General Manager of Oriental Bank of Commerce.
