Azamgarh: A major racket involved in luring unemployed youth with fake promises of overseas jobs and pushing them into international drug trafficking has been exposed. Police have arrested two accused in the case, while searches are underway for other members of the syndicate. The entire network came to light after a young man, allegedly trapped by the gang, was sentenced to life imprisonment in Dubai.

According to the complaint filed by Sunil Yadav, a resident of Shri Nagar Sieraha village under Bilariyaganj area, Vinod Yadav alias Guddu, Shyam Yadav, and Laljit Yadav were operating an organised network. The group allegedly ran an office in the Rani Ki Sarai area, where they targeted unemployed youth by promising overseas employment and charging them substantial amounts of money. Once trust was established through visa and travel arrangements, victims were allegedly pushed into drug trafficking operations abroad.

Parcel Described as Medicine Contained Morphine

The victim’s family stated that his brother, Ajay Yadav, was also sent to Dubai after paying ₹65,000 to the gang. He was provided with a fake visa and, before departure, was handed a parcel and instructed to deliver it to a person at the Dubai airport, being told it contained “medicine.” Unaware of its contents, Ajay reportedly carried the package in his luggage.

During security checks at Fujairah Airport in Dubai, authorities recovered morphine from Ajay Yadav’s bag. On December 23, 2025, a Dubai court sentenced him to life imprisonment in the case, leaving his family in shock. The family has maintained that he was innocent and had been framed as part of a larger conspiracy.

Police Probe Wider Network and More Victims

Following the complaint in India, police arrested Vinod Yadav alias Guddu, Shyam Yadav, and Laljit Yadav. Preliminary investigation suggests that the gang had been active for a long time, systematically targeting unemployed youth and linking them to international drug smuggling networks under the guise of overseas employment.

Experts have also raised concerns over the growing role of digital and social engineering-based fraud in such cases. Commenting on the trend, renowned cyber crime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh stated that such syndicates “manipulate victims through fake promises, emotional pressure, and false documentation, ultimately pushing them into serious international crimes without their knowledge. Every overseas job offer must be thoroughly verified before any payment or travel.”

Police officials said efforts are underway to identify other members of the network and trace their locations. The exposure of the racket has triggered panic in the region, with several families coming forward with similar complaints of being duped.

Investigators revealed that the gang primarily operated through social media platforms and local contacts to target unemployed youth. Victims were shown fake visa approvals, flight arrangements, and job offers to build trust. Later, they were allegedly instructed to carry “courier parcels” or “medicine packets,” which were used to smuggle narcotics across borders.

Warning Over Social Engineering and Fake Documentation

The office operating in Rani Ki Sarai is believed to have served as the central hub of the operation, where forged documents were prepared and money was collected from victims. Police are now investigating whether the syndicate has links across multiple states and how many individuals may have been similarly trapped.

Officials have described the case as more than a local fraud, indicating its connection to a wider human trafficking and international drug smuggling network. Police have confirmed that further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses and the entire racket is expected to be fully uncovered soon.
