Assam Police have arrested six people in a suspected mule account fraud network with possible links to Pakistani operatives.

How Did the Fraud Come to Light?

The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) began investigating the suspected financial fraud network after Sonitpur Police registered a complaint based on intelligence inputs from central agencies, including Military Intelligence, Gajraj, Tezpur.

Investigators identified suspicious transactions in a State Bank of India account belonging to Marjina Begum of Guwahati. Between June 22 and August 5, 2026, the account received lakhs of rupees through multiple transactions. The money was allegedly withdrawn shortly after being deposited, raising concerns that the account was being used to route suspected fraudulent funds.

Who Has Been Arrested?

The investigation led police to two additional accused, Mofijul Haque, 22, and Himangshu Das, 19, both residents of Bamunimaidan. The three suspects were arrested during an STF operation on October 28.

Further raids in Guwahati resulted in three more arrests. Rakib Hussain, 34, was apprehended from Ganesh Bagar on October 29, while Iftar Hussain, 25, and Arman Azuz Hoque, 20, were arrested from Uzanbazar and Ananda Bagar, respectively, on October 30.

Police seized mobile phones, laptops, bank passbooks, ATM cards and other electronic devices and documents considered relevant to the investigation. Guwahati City Police assisted the STF during the operations.

How Was the Network Operating?

Preliminary findings suggest that the suspected network had been operating across different parts of India for nearly two years, using multiple bank accounts to transfer money allegedly generated through online financial fraud.

Investigators believe the transactions could involve several crores of rupees, although the exact amount remains undetermined.

The STF also suspects that a key operator based outside Assam coordinated the activities of other members responsible for handling bank accounts and financial transactions.

The STF is examining possible connections between the suspected financial fraud network and Pakistan Intelligence Operatives (PIOs). Investigators are also assessing whether other anti-national elements played any role in the operation.

However, the suspected connections remain under investigation, and no confirmed link has been established in the available findings.

Police are continuing to trace the movement of funds and identify additional bank accounts allegedly used by the network. The investigation remains ongoing, with six arrests made so far.
