Apple Pay could make its India debut in October 2026, bringing card-based tap-and-pay transactions to iPhone users.

When could Apple Pay launch in India?

The mobile payment service could launch in India as early as October, according to reports cited in the material. The move would bring Apple’s payment platform to a market where digital payments are already widely used.

Apple Pay was launched in the United States in 2014 and has since expanded to several other countries. Its proposed India entry would place the service alongside existing payment options in a crowded digital payments market.

The initial rollout is expected to focus on card-based payments. However, reports differ on whether Unified Payments Interface, or UPI, support would be available immediately or added later.

How would Apple Pay work?

Apple Pay allows users to save tokenised versions of their credit or debit cards on an iPhone or Apple Watch. At a compatible contactless payment terminal, users can tap their device and authenticate the transaction using Face ID or Touch ID.

This means customers would not need to open a separate payment application for a contactless card transaction. The service would rely on participating banks and card networks for its card-based payment functionality.

The proposed launch would introduce another payment option for iPhone users in India, where UPI-based applications are already used extensively.

Which banks are involved?

Apple has been in discussions with major banks and payment networks as it prepares for a possible launch. The material names Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank among the banks involved in talks, along with Visa and Mastercard.

Reports cited in the material suggest Axis Bank could become Apple’s first major banking partner for the service. Deals involving HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank, however, were described as not yet finalised.

Another report referred specifically to an initial rollout involving Axis Bank credit cards. The precise range of banks and cards available at launch therefore remains unclear.

Will Apple Pay support UPI?

UPI remains one of the central questions surrounding Apple Pay’s expected entry into India. One account says Apple is planning UPI support alongside regular card-based payments, while another indicates that the initial rollout may be limited to cards.

Earlier reports cited in the material suggested Apple could begin with card support and introduce UPI later. This means it is not yet clear whether users will be able to make UPI payments through Apple Pay from the first day of its reported launch.

UPI integration would significantly broaden the ways the service could be used, given the widespread use of UPI across payment applications and merchants in India.

What remains uncertain before launch?

Although multiple reports point to an October 2026 launch, several details remain unsettled. These include the final list of participating banks, the cards supported at launch and whether UPI integration will be available immediately.

The service’s expected card-based model would allow users to make contactless purchases using tokenised card details stored on their devices. Its eventual scope in India, however, will depend on the payment options and banking partnerships available when the service formally arrives.

For now, the material indicates that October is the expected launch window rather than providing a confirmed launch date.
