The captain of an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi that experienced a sudden loss of altitude last week has reportedly tested positive for marijuana in a confirmatory drug test, according to Indian television channels. Reuters said it could not independently verify those reports, while Air India did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Civil Aviation Ministry Summons Air India CEO
Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministry of Civil Aviation summoned Air India Chief Executive Officer Campbell Wilson over the incident involving an Airbus A320neo aircraft. Indian authorities had already opened an investigation after the flight experienced what the government described as a “momentary altitude variation” while flying over Odisha.
The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers and eight crew members. Thirteen passengers and four crew members were injured during the incident, although the flight subsequently landed safely in Delhi.
Initial Screening Had Required Confirmatory Testing
The Ministry of Civil Aviation had said on Sunday that the captain’s initial screening for psychoactive substances produced a result that required further laboratory confirmation. Air India had said at the time that it had not been informed of the final result.
Television channels reported on Tuesday that the confirmatory test had returned positive for marijuana. Reuters said it was unable to immediately verify those reports independently.
Investigation Continues After Altitude Loss
The incident has drawn regulatory attention because of the sudden altitude change and the injuries reported on board. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the flight and the conduct of the crew as part of the continuing investigation.
The Phuket-Delhi flight had lost about 300 feet of altitude before recovering. Despite the incident, the aircraft completed its journey and landed safely in the national capital.
