With the growing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cyber fraud methods are also evolving rapidly. Scammers can now obtain a few seconds of a person’s voice and use AI-based technology to create a convincing imitation. They can then impersonate a family member, friend or colleague and claim that they are facing an emergency, pressuring the victim to transfer money immediately. This type of fraud is commonly known as Voice Cloning Fraud.
Social media platforms, YouTube videos, Instagram Reels and WhatsApp Voice Notes can become potential sources for collecting voice samples. AI Voice Synthesis Tools can analyse a short audio clip and reproduce characteristics of a person’s voice. Scammers can then generate new sentences in the cloned voice and use them during fraudulent calls.
Scammers First Collect the Voice, Then Build the Fraud Story
In a Voice Cloning Fraud, scammers first obtain a voice sample of their intended target or someone close to the victim. The sample may come from publicly available videos, social media posts or audio recordings. AI technology can then be used to create an artificial version of the voice.
The next step involves creating an emotionally disturbing story designed to make the victim panic. Scammers may claim that a family member has met with an accident, been admitted to a hospital, been detained by police or kidnapped. They then demand immediate financial assistance.
Because the voice sounds familiar, victims may initially believe that they are actually speaking to someone they know. Scammers intensify the pressure by insisting that money be transferred immediately. In some cases, victims may also be instructed not to disconnect the call or contact anyone else.
Prof. Triveni Singh: Emotional Pressure Is the Biggest Weapon
Renowned cyber crime expert and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh has repeatedly warned about the growing threat posed by AI-based voice cloning and deepfake fraud. Such scams do not necessarily require criminals to possess advanced technical expertise. Easily accessible AI tools can potentially be used to reproduce voices from publicly available audio and video material.
According to Prof. Singh, the biggest weapon in Voice Cloning Scams is often not the technology itself but the victim’s trust and emotional reaction. A familiar voice should therefore not be treated as sufficient proof of identity. If someone close suddenly asks for money during an emergency, the conversation should be interrupted and the person’s identity independently verified through another trusted channel.
Caller ID Spoofing Can Make the Scam More Convincing
Scammers may also use techniques such as Caller ID Spoofing to make fraudulent calls appear more credible. The number displayed on the victim’s phone may appear similar to that of a known contact.
Fraudsters can also add background sounds such as crying, shouting or panic to intensify the victim’s emotional response. Once the victim is distressed, scammers may demand immediate payment through UPI, QR Codes, Digital Wallets or other payment methods.
After the money is transferred, the funds can be moved through multiple bank accounts or other channels, making it more difficult for investigators to trace and recover the money.
Create a Secret Code Word With Family Members
One effective precaution is to establish a Secret Code Word or a private phrase with close family members. If someone calls in an emergency using a familiar voice and asks for money, the caller can be asked to provide the pre-agreed code word.
People should also avoid making immediate payments after receiving a suspicious emergency call. Instead, they should disconnect the call and contact the person directly using a previously saved and trusted number. The number displayed on an incoming call should not be treated as independent proof of identity.
Never Make an Immediate Payment Under Pressure
A demand to transfer money within seconds during an alleged emergency is a major warning sign. If the caller repeatedly insists that the victim must not disconnect, speak to anyone else or verify the situation, the request should be treated with suspicion.
People should also be careful about their digital voice and video footprint. Limiting publicly available audio and video content and strengthening social media privacy settings can reduce the amount of voice data available to potential scammers.
Report Financial Fraud Immediately
If a person becomes a victim of online financial fraud in India, the incident should be reported immediately through the 1930 Cyber Crime Helpline. Complaints can also be filed through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Suspicious calls or messages can additionally be reported through the available reporting mechanisms of the Sanchar Saathi platform.
The key weakness of Voice Cloning Fraud is that while scammers can imitate a person’s voice, they cannot independently prove that they are the actual person. Therefore, instead of reacting emotionally to a familiar voice, victims should disconnect the call, contact the person through another trusted number and independently verify the emergency before taking any financial action.
