In a major crackdown on international gold smuggling, authorities at Ahmedabad airport have seized 24-carat gold worth approximately ₹4.26 crore from a passenger flight arriving from Dubai. The smugglers employed an unusual concealment method that surprised investigators, hiding the precious metal inside a speaker box installed in the aircraft’s front lavatory.

Gold Found Inside Aircraft Lavatory

The recovery was made from IndiGo flight 6E-1478, which landed at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad from Dubai. Officials received intelligence inputs regarding suspicious activity associated with the flight, prompting a detailed inspection of the aircraft after its arrival.

Aircraft engineers assisted investigators during the search operation. During the examination of the lavatory area, officials focused on a wall-mounted speaker box, where they discovered multiple gold biscuits carefully wrapped in black plastic tape and concealed inside the compartment.

Authorities immediately secured the package and conducted a detailed assessment. Subsequent verification confirmed that the seizure comprised 24 gold biscuits weighing a total of 2,799.3 grams. The estimated market value of the recovered gold has been placed at around ₹4.26 crore.

24 Gold Biscuits Seized

Videos of the operation have since surfaced, showing officials dismantling the speaker box and retrieving the concealed packages. Additional footage captured the removal of gold bars from the tightly wrapped black tape. The seizure has once again highlighted the increasingly sophisticated methods being adopted by smuggling syndicates attempting to evade airport security and customs checks.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the gold was likely intended for illegal entry into India through an organized smuggling network. Investigators believe the use of a technical component inside the aircraft suggests advance planning and possible involvement of individuals familiar with the aircraft’s layout and operational systems.

Customs Act Proceedings Initiated

According to officials, the manner in which the gold was concealed clearly points to an attempt to bypass legal declaration procedures and customs regulations. Despite the significant value of the recovered consignment, no individual has come forward to claim ownership of the gold.

As a result, the consignment has been classified as unclaimed property and seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Authorities have initiated further proceedings in accordance with the law while expanding the scope of the investigation.

Investigators are now attempting to determine at what stage the gold was placed inside the aircraft and identify the individuals responsible for the operation. Records related to the flight crew, ground handling personnel, maintenance activities, and other associated stakeholders are being scrutinized. CCTV footage and technical movement logs are also being analyzed to establish the chain of events.

India has witnessed several major gold smuggling cases at international airports in recent years. However, the concealment of such a large quantity of gold inside an aircraft speaker box is being viewed as an unusually sophisticated method. Experts note that high domestic demand and import duties on gold continue to incentivize smuggling networks to develop innovative concealment techniques.

The seized gold remains in government custody while the investigation continues. Authorities expect that technical evidence, surveillance footage, and operational records connected to the flight will help uncover the larger network behind the smuggling attempt and identify those involved in the operation.
