Thane district police have busted an alleged human trafficking and prostitution racket operating in the region, safely rescuing a 35-year-old television actress and arresting a 39-year-old woman. The operation followed specific intelligence provided by a non-governmental organisation, prompting law enforcement to conduct an undercover sting at a hotel along Mira-Bhayandar Road. Officials stated that a male associate linked to the network remains at large, while preliminary inquiries indicate that women working across television serials, web series, and promotional shoots were systematically targeted and coerced into sex work.

Decoy Operation Leads to Hotel Raid and Rescue

Acting on the tip-off, investigators coordinated a targeted plan to establish evidence against the syndicate on October 8. A police operative was deployed as an undercover customer to the identified establishment on Mira-Bhayandar Road. Once the transaction was initiated, a police team moved in, allegedly intercepting the primary suspect as she accepted cash to push women into commercial sexual exploitation.

During the subsequent search, officers secured the 35-year-old actress, who has appeared in Hindi television shows and digital streaming projects. Authorities have withheld her personal details to protect her privacy. Following the operation, she was transferred to the care of the Mumbai-based Rescue Foundation to receive necessary support and formal protective custody.

Prime Suspect Arrested Under Human Trafficking Provisions

Investigators identified the arrested individual as Tabassum alias Sonia Umar Qureshi, a native of Surguja district in Chhattisgarh currently residing in Mumbai’s Jogeshwari neighbourhood. She has been booked under Section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses trafficking offenses, alongside corresponding provisions of the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act.

Police records allege that Qureshi coordinated the commercial sex network alongside an unidentified male collaborator who fled the scene prior to the raid. Officials are currently interrogating the suspect and reviewing her mobile contact records to map out the broader operations of the illicit ring. Police noted that while the primary targets appeared to be working actors and models, the full duration of the syndicate’s operations and the total number of affected victims remain under verification.

Manhunt Launched for Associate as Network Probed

The Mira-Bhayandar police division has expanded its investigation to track down Qureshi’s fleeing male partner, with multiple search parties reviewing local travel routes and communication logs. Detectives are also examining the financial trails and specific methods employed by the accused to determine whether deceptive employment offers, financial inducements, or coercive threats were used to ensnare women seeking regular industry work.

The incident has highlighted persistent concerns surrounding the vulnerability of entertainment professionals who navigate informal hiring channels for television serials, web series, and commercial photo shoots. Police officials confirmed that legal proceedings are continuing, with further arrests expected once the remaining suspect is traced and the complete scope of the trafficking network is determined.
