A Flydubai flight operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv made an emergency diversion to Tabuk in Saudi Arabia following a violent knife confrontation between two pilots inside the cockpit. Flight FZ1073, carrying approximately 180 passengers aboard a Boeing 737 MAX 8, experienced a sudden drop in altitude and triggered multiple emergency transponder signals before landing safely. The Oman-origin co-pilot allegedly attacked the Indian flight commander, Captain Smit Machchhar, in an attempt to seize control of the aircraft while cruising at high altitude.
Midair Emergency and Rapid Descent
The incident began while the passenger jet was cruising at an altitude of nearly 34,000 feet. During the confrontation, the aircraft experienced an uncontrolled descent, dropping below 17,000 feet within a brief span. The crew initially transmitted emergency transponder code 7700 to indicate a general aviation emergency, followed swiftly by code 7500, the international signal designating unlawful interference or hijacking. The transmission of the 7500 code alarmed regional aviation monitors and prompted Israel to scramble fighter jets amid heightened security concerns.
Passengers and crew members quickly intervened, entering the cockpit area to assist in overpowering and restraining the armed co-pilot. Once stability returned to the flight deck, a second 7700 general emergency code was broadcast as the pilots diverted away from Israeli airspace toward Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Regional Airport in Tabuk. All passengers and crew members were successfully evacuated upon landing on Saudi soil.
Captain Stabilised After Emergency Surgery
Captain Machchhar sustained serious stab wounds during the struggle and was transferred directly to a hospital in Tabuk, where medical staff performed emergency surgery. Hospital officials later confirmed that his condition had stabilised following the procedure. The co-pilot, who also sustained injuries while being subdued, received medical attention under official custody.
International leaders commended the Indian pilot for averting a major aviation disaster under severe duress. Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Captain Machchhar as a hero, commending his resolve and professional courage in safeguarding hundreds of civilian lives despite severe physical trauma. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also recognised Captain Machchhar as a true hero for managing to safely land the passenger aircraft under extreme distress. Machchhar, an experienced aviator who served nearly a decade with SpiceJet before joining Flydubai in 2022, drew wide praise across global aviation circles.
Security Inquiries and Flight Deck Breach
Multinational authorities have opened an exhaustive investigation to reconstruct the exact timeline of the cockpit assault and determine how a knife breached sterile airport screening. Investigators are examining flight data records, cockpit voice recordings, altitude deviations, and the communications surrounding the transmission of the hijacking transponder code. Forensic experts are evaluating whether the assailant displayed warning signs prior to boarding the flight in Dubai.
A key focus of the inquiry remains establishing the co-pilot’s motive and determining whether the incident constituted an act of terrorism. While Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir alleged that the co-pilot intended to crash the airliner to kill Israeli passengers, official investigators stressed that formal classifications will depend entirely on verified evidence gathered from cockpit materials, communication logs, and security vetting procedures.
