YouTube’s creator economy in India is increasingly becoming a significant contributor to employment and economic activity, extending beyond digital content creation.

According to a new report, the creator ecosystem linked to YouTube contributed around ₹18,000 crore to India’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2025. During the same period, the ecosystem supported around 9.6 lakh jobs, both directly and indirectly.

How Big Is India’s YouTube Creator Economy?

According to the report, the number of YouTube channels in India and the revenue generated through them have continued to grow. As of June 2026, more than 20,000 YouTube channels in the country had over one million subscribers.

The figure indicates that video creation in India is no longer limited to entertainment or personal expression but has become a source of regular income and business activity for a large number of people.

One of the key indicators of the expansion of the creator economy is the growing number of channels generating substantial revenue from the platform.

The report said the number of YouTube channels earning ₹10 lakh or more increased by more than 20% in a year. This suggests that along with content creation, opportunities for advertising, brand partnerships and other forms of digital monetisation are also expanding.

What Is Driving the Growth?

The growing availability of internet connectivity and smartphones in India has accelerated this transformation. A large number of creators from smaller cities and towns are producing videos in different languages.

Channels covering education, technology, gaming, entertainment, food, travel, fitness, news and local culture have expanded their reach. Content produced in regional languages has also helped broaden the audience base.

Advertising displayed on the platform remains one of the traditional sources of income for creators, but additional monetisation avenues have expanded over time. Brand partnerships, sponsored content and other digital services connected with audiences have created additional revenue opportunities for successful channels. As a result, content creation has developed into a small digital business for many creators.

How Is YouTube Creating Jobs?

The impact of YouTube’s creator economy is not limited to people who produce videos. It also creates employment opportunities in areas such as camera and audio equipment, video editing, graphic design, digital marketing, management, advertising, brand collaborations and other related services. Taking this broader ecosystem into account, the report estimated that 9.6 lakh jobs were supported by the creator economy.

The presence of more than 20,000 channels with over one million subscribers also reflects the scale of India’s digital audience market. Channels capable of reaching large audiences can attract greater interest from brands and advertisers, while creators also face the challenge of consistently producing quality content and retaining viewers.

Are More Creators Making Money?

The report’s finding that the number of channels generating annual revenue of ₹10 lakh or more grew by more than 20% is particularly significant. It indicates that the creator economy is not limited to large and established channels. New and mid-sized channels are also entering the revenue-generating segment as the digital content market expands.

With the consumption of digital content continuing to grow in India, the creator-led business ecosystem is expected to become broader in the coming years. However, income is not uniform across creators, and their earnings depend on factors such as audience size, content quality, subject matter, advertising demand and the availability of different monetisation sources.

The available figures indicate that YouTube’s creator ecosystem has become an important part of India’s digital economy, contributing to both employment and economic activity. The growing number of high-subscriber channels and the rise in channels generating significant revenue underline the expanding commercial role of online video creation in the country.

YouTube’s impact in India now extends well beyond individual creators. The ecosystem supports work in editing, production, marketing, advertising and other services, while the rise in million-subscriber and high-earning channels shows how online content creation is developing into a wider digital business economy.
