New Delhi. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested Sandeep Mistry, an associate of fugitive businessman Nirav Modi, after his extradition from Dubai in connection with the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case.

According to officials, Mistry was brought to India from the United Arab Emirates and taken into CBI custody following the completion of the extradition process. His arrest is linked to the investigation into the alleged financial fraud involving PNB and businesses associated with Nirav Modi.

After being brought back to India, Mistry was produced before a Mumbai court. The court subsequently remanded him to judicial custody till October 6.

The development marks another step in the investigation into the long-running PNB fraud case, in which agencies have been examining the alleged role of several individuals and entities associated with Nirav Modi. The case involves alleged fraudulent transactions connected with PNB and has resulted in investigations and legal proceedings in India and abroad.

Mistry’s extradition from the UAE followed the legal process for bringing him back to India to face proceedings in the case. After his arrival, the CBI formally took him into custody and initiated the necessary legal proceedings before the court.

The agency is expected to examine Mistry’s alleged role in the transactions under investigation, his association with Nirav Modi and any financial or documentary evidence connected with the case. Details of the specific allegations against him and the evidence gathered by the investigating agency are expected to emerge as the proceedings progress.

The PNB fraud case has involved multiple investigations into the alleged misuse of banking facilities and transactions connected with companies associated with Nirav Modi. Investigators have examined financial records, banking transactions and the roles of individuals who were allegedly connected with the operations under scrutiny.

The latest arrest follows the continued efforts of Indian investigative agencies to bring accused persons located outside the country back to India. Extradition proceedings in such cases involve legal processes in the country where the individual is located before the person can be handed over to Indian authorities.

Mistry was extradited from the UAE and brought to India before being taken into custody by the CBI. His subsequent production before the Mumbai court allowed the agency to place the extradition and arrest proceedings on the judicial record.

The court’s decision to remand him to judicial custody till October 6 means that Mistry will remain in custody while the case proceeds through the next stage of judicial proceedings. Further details about the agency’s investigation, including the nature of the allegations and Mistry’s specific role, are expected to become clearer during the proceedings.

The PNB fraud investigation has remained one of the major financial crime cases involving an Indian public sector bank, with investigative agencies pursuing the alleged financial trail and the roles of persons associated with the case.

Nirav Modi, who is at the centre of the case, has been facing legal proceedings in the United Kingdom in relation to India’s efforts to secure his extradition. His name has been associated with the alleged fraud involving PNB, while investigators have also pursued other individuals linked to the case.

The arrest of Mistry after his extradition from Dubai adds another accused associate to the proceedings in India. The CBI’s investigation will now focus on establishing his alleged role, examining relevant records and tracing the financial and other links connected with the transactions under investigation.

Further developments are expected as the agency continues its investigation and the matter comes up before the Mumbai court. Mistry’s judicial custody has been fixed until October 6, after which the court will consider the next stage of proceedings in accordance with law.
