OpenAI has introduced Astra for Law, an AI model aimed at legal research, drafting and analysis for lawyers and law firms.

What is Astra for Law designed to do?

Astra for Law is presented as a customised artificial intelligence model built specifically around the requirements of law firms and legal software companies. Rather than functioning only as a general-purpose chatbot, it is intended to support tasks such as legal research, finding references in earlier cases and preparing complex legal drafts.

The model is based on OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra engine, according to the information released about the product. It has been trained using a large collection of US court cases, laws, government regulations and other legal documents, with additional emphasis on legal analysis and document drafting.

The system is also designed to allow legal companies to develop customised applications for their lawyers, effectively using the model as part of specialised legal research and workflow tools.

One of the central claims surrounding the model is that it can significantly reduce the time required to locate relevant legal material. Tasks that traditionally involve searching extensive case records and documents could potentially be completed more quickly with AI assistance.

The system is intended to analyse legal matters and help lawyers identify relevant material from large databases. However, the emergence of specialised legal AI also places greater attention on questions of accuracy, verification and how lawyers should use machine-generated research or drafting in professional work.

The legal technology market already includes specialised AI companies such as Harvey and Legora. The information accompanying Astra for Law also points to possible integration with established legal software providers including Relativity, Clio, Intapp and Thomson Reuters.

Privacy is particularly important in legal work because lawyers routinely deal with confidential client information and material covered by attorney-client privilege. Astra for Law is described as incorporating privacy protocols intended for this environment.

Initial access is expected to be limited to selected leading law firms. OpenAI is also said to be working with firms including Sullivan & Cromwell, Ropes & Gray, Cooley, Latham & Watkins and Wachtell Lipton on testing and development of legal AI applications.

The involvement of established law firms provides a setting in which the technology can be tested against professional legal workflows. At the same time, questions around confidentiality, reliability and the appropriate level of human review remain central whenever AI systems are used to process sensitive legal material.

Astra for Law enters a sector where several technology companies are already developing AI products for lawyers. Thomson Reuters has introduced Thomson 1.0 for the legal sector, described as being based on its own legal research content and open-source technology.

Google has also offered Gemini Enterprise for legal professionals, while Anthropic has introduced tools for lawyers through its Claude AI assistant, including features intended to process large PDF documents.

The competition illustrates a broader shift in legal technology. AI developers and established legal information providers are increasingly building systems around research, document review and drafting, areas that have traditionally required substantial manual work.

For law firms, the important question is therefore likely to extend beyond which model can process information fastest. The practical test will be whether specialised AI tools can produce reliable results, protect confidential information and fit into existing legal workflows while keeping lawyers responsible for reviewing and validating the work they use.
