Gold and silver jewellery valued at approximately Rs 1.08 crore and Rs 8 lakh in cash were allegedly stolen from the luggage of a mother and daughter travelling in an air-conditioned coach of the Madurai-Bikaner Express. The theft occurred during their journey from Nagpur to Nokha between September 11 and September 12, following their attendance at a family engagement ceremony. The Government Railway Police in Bikaner have registered a case of theft against unidentified persons and initiated a comprehensive probe.
Loss Discovered Only After Reaching Home
The passengers occupied berths 25 and 28 in coach B-1, stowing a trolley bag alongside three to four other bags beneath their seats before going to sleep. Neither passenger observed any suspicious activity or visible disruption to their belongings throughout the transit. After alighting at Nokha station on September 12, the duo proceeded to their residence in Desalsar village with accompanying family members.
The crime was detected only upon unpacking at home, where the mother opened the main trolley bag to discover that the internal jewellery containers and cash parcels had vanished. According to the family, the stolen assets comprised nearly 70 tolas of gold jewellery, about 500 grams of silver ornaments, and Rs 8 lakh in liquid cash. Total losses exceed Rs 1.16 crore, prompting an immediate approach to railway enforcement authorities.
Police Scrutinise Route and Passenger Manifests
Acting on the formal complaint, the Bikaner GRP registered an official first information report on September 14 against unknown perpetrators. Because the victims remained unaware of the loss throughout the transit, investigators are attempting to pinpoint whether the theft was executed while the train was running or during prolonged halts at intermediate stations.
Inquiry teams are reviewing closed-circuit television footage recorded across key railway platforms along the Nagpur-Bikaner corridor to track suspicious movements around coach B-1. Alongside electronic surveillance, investigators are gathering records of on-duty railway personnel, coach attendants, and passengers who held reservations adjacent to seats 25 and 28 on the night of September 11.
Forensic Evaluation and Railway Vigilance
Efforts remain focused on determining how the perpetrators accessed the interior compartments of the luggage without disturbing the sleeping passengers or leaving overt signs of forced entry. As of now, none of the stolen jewellery or cash has been recovered. Officials are analysing passenger movement logs and duty rosters to establish who entered the compartment during the overnight leg.
The incident underscores ongoing vulnerabilities surrounding the carriage of high-value personal effects on long-distance trains. Railway authorities continue to urge travellers carrying substantial valuables to maintain personal supervision and secure luggage with robust locking mechanisms, while the Bikaner GRP pursues leads from platform camera footage and station checkpoint records.
