Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh: Police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) have arrested two alleged interstate gold smugglers in Chandauli after recovering 2.565 kg of gold biscuits worth around ₹3.92 crore from a specially constructed compartment hidden beneath the gearbox of their car.
According to police, the accused were allegedly transporting the gold from Birbhum in West Bengal to Delhi when their vehicle was intercepted during highway checking.
Car Tries To Flee During Highway Checking
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Wednesday near Navahi Pulia in the Chandauli Kotwali area.
Police said the joint team was conducting routine checks when it received information about individuals allegedly carrying illegal goods in a car. Officers intensified surveillance and began checking vehicles matching the description.
A white-coloured car was subsequently spotted approaching the checking point. Police signalled the driver to stop, but he allegedly accelerated and attempted to flee.
The team intercepted the vehicle after surrounding it and took both occupants into custody.
2.565 Kg Gold Found Beneath Gearbox
During a detailed search, officers discovered a specially constructed concealed compartment beneath the gearbox.
According to police, the compartment appeared to have been designed to hide material from routine searches. Officers found two gold bars wrapped in brown tape and placed inside a cloth belt.
The recovered gold weighed 2.565 kg and was estimated by authorities to have a market value of approximately ₹3.92 crore.
Police have seized both the gold and the vehicle and are examining how the concealed compartment was constructed and whether the car had been specifically modified for smuggling.
Two Interstate Suspects Arrested
The arrested suspects have been identified as Zuber Mubarak Sheikh, a resident of Sangli, Maharashtra, and Manish Kumar, a resident of Fatehabad, Haryana.
Police said Sheikh was driving the vehicle while Kumar was travelling with him.
During preliminary questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators that they had collected the gold from Birbhum district in West Bengal and were taking it to Delhi.
However, investigators are still working to establish the source of the gold and identify the alleged supplier and intended recipient.
Police Probe Possible Interstate Smuggling Network
The seizure has prompted investigators to examine whether the accused were part of a larger interstate gold-smuggling network.
Authorities are looking into the route allegedly taken by the suspects, their contacts and their previous movements. Investigators are also examining whether the two men had transported similar consignments in the past.
The role of other individuals involved in procuring, transporting or receiving the gold is also being investigated.
