Meeting a stranger through a dating application was once considered a personal risk, but growing instances of romance fraud have forced users to verify whether potential matches are authentic before stepping out for a first date. Online romance scams in India have broadened into varied operations, including the use of artificial intelligence to generate fake photographs, the staging of bogus investment schemes, the inflation of restaurant bills at coordinated venues, and extortion through private media. This proliferation of deceptive practices has steadily eroded spontaneous trust, replacing it with layered digital background checks and strict personal safety routines.
Rising Financial Losses and Bot Encounters
A 2026 survey conducted by cybersecurity firm McAfee revealed that 75 per cent of Indian respondents encountered fake profiles or photographs across dating platforms and social networks that appeared to be generated by artificial intelligence. Furthermore, 46 per cent of participants reported discovering that they had been interacting with an automated bot or fraudulent persona. Financial fallout remains acute, with nearly one in seven respondents stating they lost money to romance scams, suffering an average financial loss of approximately Rs 2.8 lakh.
Younger adults report the highest rate of exposure to these digital traps. The survey recorded that 48 per cent of respondents aged between 25 and 34 encountered potential romance fraud at least once a week, and roughly one-third in this age group lost funds to scammers. Official bodies have acknowledged the expanding risk, with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre issuing warnings regarding fraudsters exploiting dating and matrimonial networks. Deceptive operators frequently build emotional rapport over weeks, subsequently guiding targets toward bogus investments, financial transactions, or the disclosure of sensitive banking credentials and identity cards.
Psychological Manipulation and Venue Traps
Cybercrime specialist and former IPS officer Prof. Triveni Singh stated that romance-related fraud relies primarily on psychological manipulation and manufactured interpersonal trust rather than advanced software exploits. Fraudulent actors establish an appealing profile, cultivate personal intimacy, and gradually influence a victim to part with money under the guise of an emergency, cryptocurrency investment, or stock market opportunity. Prof. Singh noted that sudden financial requests, urgent investment propositions, demands for secrecy, and repetitive emotional appeals serve as immediate red flags.
Physical meetings have introduced another layer of vulnerability, with victims frequently steered toward specific cafes or bars only to receive exorbitant bills arranged through collusive staff. A Gurugram-based advertising professional stated that he now insists on selecting familiar public locations independently, viewing any match who aggressively pushes a particular venue as suspicious. Beyond choosing safe ground, he regularly conducts preliminary video calls and inspects external social media activity before committing to a meeting in person.
The Shift Toward Defensive Dating
Marriage and relationship counsellors in Pune observe that continuous fraud alerts have given rise to a standard practice termed defensive dating. Users routinely mandate video verifications, cross-check credentials across external platforms, decline visits to unfamiliar establishments, and transmit live location coordinates to friends or relatives during their dates. While defensive measures were historically adopted primarily by women out of physical safety concerns, men are increasingly performing identical vetting procedures to protect themselves from financial extortion syndicates and inflated restaurant schemes.
The broader climate of cyber fraud reinforces this defensive posture, as McAfee data indicates 87 per cent of Indians have encountered online scams, with 51 per cent suffering direct monetary losses. While systematic verification helps shield users from predatory networks, relationship experts note that persistent suspicion also undermines the vulnerability needed to foster genuine emotional connections. For dating services, the core priority is no longer limited to connecting compatible personalities, but addressing the preliminary need to confirm that an individual behind a screen is real, safe, and trustworthy.
