New Delhi: The Centre for Police Technology (CPT) has extended its support to OpenAI’s global call for collective action on cyber defence, an initiative backed by more than 100 organisations that highlights the need for governments, technology companies, cybersecurity providers, critical-infrastructure operators and researchers to collaborate against increasingly sophisticated AI-enabled cyber threats.
OpenAI’s initiative comes as artificial intelligence begins transforming both sides of cybersecurity. AI can potentially accelerate reconnaissance, vulnerability discovery, social engineering and other stages of cyberattacks, while simultaneously giving defenders powerful capabilities for threat detection, vulnerability management, investigation, remediation and incident response.
OpenAI’s Collective Cyber Defence Initiative
The global initiative has attracted a wide technology and cybersecurity coalition.
Major supporting organisations include Microsoft, Google, AWS, Anthropic, Cisco, IBM, Oracle, Cloudflare, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, Check Point, Tenable, SentinelOne, Sophos, Zscaler, Akamai, Darktrace, Elastic, Proofpoint and Red Hat.
Consulting and technology-services organisations including Accenture, Capgemini, Cognizant, KPMG and PwC, as well as financial-sector organisations such as Mastercard, Visa, Citi and Capital One, are also among the supporters.
How Is AI Changing the Cybersecurity Threat Landscape?
A central concern behind the initiative is that organisations have a limited window to strengthen cyber defences before increasingly capable AI systems could make cyberattacks faster, cheaper and more scalable.
Critical infrastructure and essential services—including healthcare, water systems, telecommunications, financial institutions, government networks and internet infrastructure—require particular attention.
Traditional cybersecurity practices alone may no longer be sufficient. Legacy infrastructure, unpatched vulnerabilities, weak authentication, excessive privileges, insecure software and limited cybersecurity resources can create opportunities that AI-enabled attackers could potentially exploit at scale.
