New Delhi: India’s remote and rural regions could soon get another option for high-speed internet connectivity as Elon Musk’s SpaceX prepares to expand its Starlink satellite internet service in the country. The service is expected to focus on areas where conventional telecom networks remain limited or difficult to deploy, potentially improving access to broadband connectivity in villages and remote locations.
Musk shared the development in a social media post on Thursday, saying Starlink would be useful in India’s underserved regions, particularly rural areas. He highlighted the need to extend satellite-based connectivity to remote villages that continue to face gaps in conventional internet infrastructure.
Starlink’s proposed expansion comes against the backdrop of a significant difference in internet access between rural and urban India. According to figures cited by the company, 11,256 listed villages did not have 4G connectivity as of May 2026. At the same time, India had more than 1.093 billion internet subscriptions by March this year.
Rural-Urban Digital Divide Remains Wide
Although India has crossed the one-billion mark in internet subscriptions, access remains uneven across geographical regions. Rural areas accounted for more than 440.87 million subscriptions, according to the figures cited by Starlink.
The disparity becomes more evident when subscriptions are measured against population. Rural India had around 48.31 internet subscriptions per 100 people, compared with 126.80 subscriptions per 100 people in urban areas.
The figures indicate that while India has made rapid progress in expanding internet access, a substantial connectivity gap remains between villages and cities. Satellite internet could potentially help bridge this gap, particularly in locations where laying fibre networks or expanding terrestrial mobile infrastructure is difficult.
Company Working on Regulatory Approvals
SpaceX is currently working to secure the regulatory clearances required to launch Starlink services in India. Satellite-based broadband is being viewed as a potential solution for extending connectivity to geographically challenging and underserved regions.
Unlike conventional terrestrial networks, satellite internet can provide connectivity without requiring extensive local fibre or mobile tower infrastructure. This could make it particularly useful for remote villages, mountainous areas and locations where traditional network expansion involves significant logistical challenges.
However, the commercial rollout of the service will depend on the company completing the required regulatory and operational processes in India.
More Than 11,000 Villages Still Without 4G
India has made significant investments in digital infrastructure in recent years. The country has more than 1.09 billion internet subscriptions, with rural users accounting for over 440 million connections.
The government’s BharatNet project has also expanded the country’s fibre infrastructure, with more than 850,000 kilometres of optical fibre cable reportedly laid under the programme.
Despite this expansion, thousands of villages still lack 4G connectivity. The presence of more than 11,000 such villages highlights the challenge of providing reliable high-speed internet across a country with diverse terrain and widely dispersed rural populations.
Starlink’s satellite-based model could therefore add another layer to India’s connectivity infrastructure. If regulatory approvals are completed and services are launched, the company could target areas where terrestrial broadband and mobile networks have struggled to reach.
For India, the larger objective remains narrowing the digital divide and ensuring that access to high-speed internet is not restricted to major cities and urban centres. Satellite connectivity could become an additional tool in that effort, particularly for the country’s most remote and underserved communities.
