Ayodhya: Security agencies have launched a detailed investigation after a paramedical student at Rajarshi Dashrath Medical College in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, was found to have allegedly drawn a bomb diagram and written notes related to its construction. The student has been detained for questioning after the document was discovered on the college premises. Given the sensitivity of the case, the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and other security agencies have joined the investigation. Officials, however, said that apart from the handwritten document, no other suspicious material has been recovered from the student, and no evidence has so far emerged linking him to any terrorist organisation or criminal network.
According to police, the detained student, identified as Mohammad Sarfaraz from Balrampur district, is enrolled in a paramedical laboratory technician programme at the medical college. During preliminary questioning, he reportedly told investigators that he had recently watched a film based on revolutionary Bhagat Singh with three fellow students. He claimed that a scene in the film discussing bomb-making prompted him to sketch the diagram and make handwritten notes purely for informational purposes. Investigators are independently verifying this explanation.
Officials said the matter came to light after the student allegedly left the paper behind at his duty station following a night shift. The next morning, fellow students noticed the document, which reportedly contained a circular sketch resembling a bomb along with handwritten notes and markings. Concerned by its contents, they immediately informed the college administration, which in turn alerted the local police. A police team reached the campus, seized the document and initiated an inquiry.
The student was later detained from his rented accommodation near the college, where he had gone to rest after completing his duty. Since then, investigators have been questioning him in detail. Security agencies are examining his mobile phone, laptop, call records, social media activity, internet search history and other digital evidence. They are also reviewing his recent interactions and personal contacts to determine whether the document was merely an academic curiosity or indicative of any other intent.
During the investigation, police also learned that the student had been in close contact with two other students at the medical college. Both were called in for questioning and asked about his behaviour, recent activities and conversations. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from across the campus to establish the student’s movements during his duty hours and identify anyone who may have interacted with him.
Security agencies have expanded the investigation beyond the college campus and are also verifying the student’s background. Police teams in Balrampur have conducted inquiries at his residence and in the surrounding neighbourhood. According to officials, the student’s family has an ordinary social and economic background. His father, a madrasa teacher, passed away around two and a half years ago. He lives with his mother, while his elder brothers are engaged in professional work and business in different locations. Investigators said no suspicious activity linked to the family has been reported so far.
Authorities have emphasised that no conclusions will be drawn until all evidence has been thoroughly examined using forensic and technical methods. The investigation is currently focused on determining whether the document was simply a personal set of notes or whether there was any other motive behind preparing it. Police have reiterated that, at this stage, no concrete evidence has been found to suggest the existence of a terrorist plot or any serious criminal conspiracy. They have also urged the public to avoid speculation and misinformation, stressing that the facts will become clear only after the investigation is completed.
