Ayodhya: The investigation into the alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has entered a crucial phase, with the newly constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) significantly accelerating its probe. Acting on directions of the Supreme Court, the SIT has issued notices to nearly 200 individuals for questioning. Those served notices include people associated with the counting of temple donations, security arrangements, record management and other related operations. Investigators are conducting phased interrogations to establish a comprehensive account of the events surrounding the case.
According to official sources, the SIT is headed by Lucknow Range Inspector General Kiran S, with Deputy Inspector General Somen Verma and Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Grover serving as members of the investigation team. The SIT is examining the entire financial management system surrounding temple donations, including collection, storage, counting, documentation and banking procedures. Officials said the objective is not only to determine how the alleged theft occurred but also to identify any procedural lapses or financial irregularities that may have contributed to the incident.
To strengthen the financial investigation, the SIT has engaged a forensic audit expert, a chartered accountant, to conduct a scientific examination of donation-related financial records. The expert is analysing accounting documents, banking records, transaction trails and financial statements to identify any discrepancies. Investigators believe the forensic audit will help establish the movement of funds and verify the accuracy of financial records maintained by the trust.
Former office-bearers of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust have also come under the scope of the investigation. According to sources, former General Secretary Champat Rai and former office-bearer Anil Mishra have been served notices for questioning. Both had previously appeared before investigators during the initial inquiry. However, the new SIT is re-examining every aspect of the case and may question them again if required. Officials have not issued any formal statement regarding the notices.
Meanwhile, Champat Rai met Trust President Mahant Nritya Gopal Das for the first time since stepping down as General Secretary following the donation theft controversy. The meeting is being viewed as his first formal interaction with the trust chief after his resignation. Sources said Champat Rai is currently observing Chaturmas and has begun visiting saints and religious leaders to seek their blessings. Following his meeting with the trust president, he also visited several ancient monasteries and temples in Ayodhya, where he met prominent seers and spiritual leaders.
Amid the ongoing investigation, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust has taken a significant step towards enhancing transparency. In the presence of Interim General Secretary Dr. Krishna Mohan, a detailed physical verification of gold and silver bars, precious jewellery and other valuables stored in a State Bank of India locker was carried out. The entire verification process was videographed and continued from morning until late evening. Trust officials said the exercise was aimed at strengthening accountability and ensuring complete transparency in the management of donated valuables.
The heavy inflow of devotees during the holy month of Shravan has also affected the temple’s VIP darshan arrangements. According to the trust, all available online slots for Sugam (VIP) Darshan and Aarti have been fully booked until August 16. Devotees can now obtain online passes only for August 17 onwards. The trust said both online and offline facilities remain available for Sugam Darshan, Special Darshan and Aarti passes to facilitate pilgrims. Meanwhile, the SIT has continued its investigation, with officials stating that further legal action will be determined on the basis of evidence collected during questioning and the ongoing forensic examination of financial records.
