Maharajganj: The Income Tax Department has conducted extensive search operations at three business establishments in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district, recovering approximately ₹2 crore in cash. Preliminary findings have indicated suspected links to illegal cross-border business activities involving Nepal, prompting investigators to launch a detailed examination of financial transactions, business records, and digital evidence. Officials said the investigation is ongoing and further legal action will depend on the outcome of the probe.

According to officials, the search operation was carried out under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Income Tax (Investigation), Gorakhpur, at Hindustan Flour Industries in Parsauni, Hindustan Industries in Laxmipur, and Shankar Rice Mill in Sampatiha, all located along the Sonauli Highway in Maharajganj district. Investigation teams searched offices, record rooms, and financial documents for several hours. Besides the cash seizure, officials also collected a large number of business records and digital data for further examination.

Preliminary investigations reportedly suggest that the establishments may have been involved in alleged illegal supplies to Nepal. Authorities are now examining whether any cross-border commercial transactions violated tax laws, customs regulations, or other statutory provisions. However, the department has not announced any final findings and has stated that the investigation remains in progress.

The Income Tax Department is scrutinizing seized account books, invoices, banking records, and digital data to determine the nature of the business operations. Investigators believe that forensic analysis of electronic records and financial transactions could help establish the flow of funds, identify potential tax irregularities, and verify whether the reported business activities complied with applicable laws. Computers, digital storage devices, and other electronic equipment recovered during the searches are also being examined.

Officials associated with the investigation said the recovery of cash alone will not determine the outcome of the case. The probe will also focus on establishing the source of the seized funds, whether the money was properly recorded in the businesses’ financial accounts, and whether it was disclosed under the provisions of the Income Tax Act. If evidence of undisclosed income, false accounting, or other financial irregularities is found, appropriate legal action may be initiated under relevant statutory provisions.

Investigators are also matching bank accounts, GST records, income tax returns, purchase and sales invoices, transport documents, and records relating to cross-border trade. The objective is to verify whether the alleged supplies to Nepal were carried out through authorised commercial channels or whether they involved tax evasion or other regulatory violations. If required, information may also be shared with other central and state enforcement agencies.

Tax experts note that investigations involving businesses operating near international borders typically extend beyond cash seizures. Authorities generally conduct a comprehensive review of digital transactions, e-way bills, banking records, customs documentation, and cross-border trade data to identify discrepancies. Such financial analysis plays a crucial role in determining the authenticity of commercial transactions and detecting possible tax violations.

The Income Tax Department has reiterated that the investigation is continuing and that all available evidence is being thoroughly examined. If the inquiry establishes violations of the Income Tax Act or any other applicable laws, appropriate legal proceedings will be initiated against the individuals and business entities concerned. Officials added that the complete picture of the case will emerge only after the investigation and forensic analysis of the seized records are concluded.
