The Kerala government has suspended senior IPS officer M. R. Ajith Kumar pending disciplinary proceedings in connection with the alleged assault on Youth Congress workers. The decision was taken after the state government examined an inquiry report submitted by the State Police Chief. As a result, Kumar’s proposed promotion to the rank of Director General of Police (DGP) has also been kept in abeyance until further orders. The government stated that the action was necessary to ensure a fair and impartial disciplinary process based on the findings of the inquiry.
According to official sources, the State Police Chief forwarded the inquiry report to the Home Department, where it underwent detailed scrutiny. The report was subsequently placed before the Home Minister. Acting on the minister’s recommendation, the Chief Minister approved Kumar’s immediate suspension and the initiation of departmental disciplinary proceedings. The order also halted all further action regarding his promotion.
The case stems from an incident in Alappuzha in which security personnel assigned to then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan were accused of assaulting Youth Congress activists. During the inquiry into the incident, the role of M. R. Ajith Kumar was also examined. Based on the findings of the investigation, the government concluded that disciplinary action was warranted.
The suspension came a day after the Chief Minister rejected opposition allegations that the government had deliberately delayed a decision on the inquiry to facilitate Kumar’s promotion. Addressing a post-cabinet press conference, the Chief Minister said the inquiry report had been processed strictly in accordance with established procedures and denied any attempt to shield the officer.
As part of the administrative process, the inquiry report was first submitted to the State Police Chief before being forwarded to the Home Department for examination. After being reviewed by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home and Vigilance), it was placed before the Home Minister, paving the way for the government’s decision to suspend the officer and begin disciplinary proceedings.
Under the government’s order, Kumar will remain under suspension until the disciplinary inquiry is completed. During this period, the allegations against him will be examined in accordance with service rules, and a final decision will be taken after evaluating the available evidence and statements of the concerned parties. The government has maintained that the entire process will be conducted fairly, transparently and in compliance with applicable service regulations.
Administrative experts note that suspending a senior officer and withholding promotion while disciplinary proceedings are pending is an established practice intended to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and ensure an unbiased outcome. The final course of action will depend on the inquiry report, documentary evidence and the findings of the departmental proceedings.
The development has triggered political and administrative debate in Kerala. Opposition parties have described the government’s move as delayed, while the government has defended its decision, stating that every procedural requirement was followed before action was taken. Attention will now remain focused on the outcome of the disciplinary inquiry, which will determine both the future action against the officer and the status of his promotion to the rank of DGP.
