Varanasi police have registered a preliminary case at Bhelupur police station after a man accused others of cheating his family of ₹12 lakh on the promise of getting back ancestral land. The complaint was lodged on the basis of an application submitted by the victim’s mother, and police have begun an inquiry into the allegations.
Ancestral Land Allegedly Sold Through Fake Will
Complainant Mumtaz Ahmad, originally from Bajardiha and currently residing in Gandhi Nagar, East Delhi, alleged that his family lives in Delhi for work and visits Varanasi from time to time. According to the complaint, their ancestral land was earlier registered in the names of other persons in Abdul Azizabad on the basis of an alleged fake will.
After learning about the matter, Ahmad said he filed a complaint through his maternal uncle, Javed Alam, against those involved. The complaint alleged that the land was later recorded in January 2024 in the names of Ahmad and Javed Alam after Mohammad Shamim, a resident of Rewdi Talab, prepared an affidavit by allegedly misleading Javed Alam.
Money Taken on Promise of Land Return
The complaint further stated that when Mumtaz opposed the alleged action, Mohammad Shamim claimed that ₹12 lakh would be required to get the land returned. Ahmad alleged that the amount was taken from him on that assurance.
According to the complaint, despite receiving the money, the land was not returned and the amount was not refunded. The allegations include cheating and related offences.
Police Begin Investigation at Bhelupur Station
Bhelupur police station in-charge Durga Singh said a preliminary case has been registered against Mohammad Shamim under cheating and other relevant sections. The matter is now under investigation.
Police are examining the complaint and the circumstances related to the alleged transfer of land, the affidavit and the payment claimed by the complainant. Further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
