A large-scale search operation conducted against a government engineer in Odisha as part of an investigation into alleged disproportionate assets has led to the discovery of properties and valuables worth several crores of rupees. Investigators uncovered dozens of land plots, two farmhouses, substantial quantities of gold and silver jewellery, cash, and documents related to financial investments. The findings have prompted authorities to undertake a detailed assessment of the assets’ market value and their sources of acquisition.

The Multi-District Raid Operation

According to officials, the searches were carried out at premises linked to Satyanarayan Sethi, an Assistant Executive Engineer posted in Kotpad block of Koraput district. Sethi is under investigation over allegations that he accumulated assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. Acting on a search warrant issued by a special court, investigators simultaneously raided multiple locations connected to him.

Sources familiar with the investigation said seven premises associated with Sethi were brought under scrutiny. These included residential properties, real-estate holdings and office-related locations. The operation was conducted across Koraput, Khordha and Kendrapara districts, with coordinated teams deployed to prevent the removal or concealment of documents and other evidence. A sizeable team of officials participated in the operation, including seven Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs), nine inspectors, 11 Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASIs) and several supporting personnel.

Inventory of Recovered Wealth

During the preliminary phase of the investigation, authorities identified a total of 49 plots of land allegedly linked to the engineer. Of these, details relating to 32 plots were immediately verified. Investigators also discovered two farmhouses, whose ownership status and market valuation are currently being examined. Officials believe the actual value of the properties could be significantly higher than initial estimates.

The detailed tracking timeline of the asset mapping followed several key stages. The process started with the multi-district site entry, where coordinated enforcement teams secured all seven linked premises across three districts. This was followed by the document mapping phase, during which property deeds, banking files, and postal deposit ledgers were systematically audited. Finally, the operation moved to physical inventory logging, resulting in the successful tracking of 940 grams of gold jewellery, 600 grams of silver ornaments, and exactly ₹5.48 lakh in liquid cash.

Financial Verification and Valuation Realities

Investigators further identified a residential flat as well as investments in bank and postal deposit schemes. Verification of these assets is still underway, and officials are collecting records from financial institutions to determine the precise value of the investments and establish the timeline of their acquisition.

Experts note that in disproportionate-assets investigations, authorities examine not only the quantity of assets but also the timing of purchases, funding sources and their correlation with an individual’s declared income. These factors play a crucial role in determining whether the assets were accumulated through legitimate means. The investigation is now focused on analysing Sethi’s financial records, income declarations, tax filings, bank accounts and property documents. If investigators conclude that the wealth is disproportionate to declared earnings, further legal proceedings could follow.
