Jalandhar: A dispute over hair allegedly found in a burger at a chicken soup shop in Jalandhar led to a late-night confrontation between the shop owner and a man claiming to be a journalist, prompting the shopkeeper to approach police with a complaint.
The incident took place near Baboo Jagjivan Ram Chowk in Jalandhar, at Patiala Shahi Chicken Soup. Shop owner Babbal said two youths had first visited the shop on Sunday evening, purchased burgers and later returned claiming that there was hair in the food. The matter escalated after one of them allegedly began recording videos and making accusations against the shop.

Dispute Begins After Burger Purchase
According to the shopkeeper’s account, the two youths came to the shop around 6 pm to 6.30 pm and bought burgers. They later returned and alleged that hair had been found in one of the burgers. Babbal said he believed the allegation was deliberate, arguing that his shop maintains cleanliness and that staff members wear caps, making it unlikely that hair could have entered the food.
He said the issue intensified when the youths began arguing and recording video at the shop. Babbal alleged that the person later identified as Gurpreet Singh Gopi claimed to be a journalist and started filming, after which the shop’s reputation was allegedly targeted on social media.
Alleged Attempt To Defame Business
The shopkeeper alleged that the incident was part of a planned attempt to damage the reputation of established shops and extract money from them. He claimed that he has been running the business for the past 10 years and that some people are operating a racket to threaten shopkeepers by invoking food samples and licence-related issues.
Babbal further alleged that the man recording the video attempted to enter the shop from inside while looking at the camera and later stood outside to continue filming. He said the act was followed by threats to blacklist the shop and harm its image through social media.
Police Registers Complaint
A complaint has been lodged at Basti Bawa Khel police station. Duty officer Neela Singh said the accused person had been called to present his side. Police said that if there was any concern over food quality, the complaint should have been made to the health department or food inspector rather than publicly harassing or blacklisting a shopkeeper.
Police said they would hear both sides before taking further legal action. The shopkeeper said he had built his name through years of work and would also pursue a defamation case to protect his reputation.
