The Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested Assistant Police Inspector Vaishali Totewar after allegedly trapping her in a bribery case involving Rs 28 lakh in Pune. Officials said she had demanded Rs 30 lakh from a complainant, and the amount was allegedly being accepted through a private person when the trap was laid.

Bribe Demand Under Probe

Totewar was previously posted in the Economic Offences Wing at the Pune Police Commissionerate, where she was handling eight to nine complaint applications under investigation. During the probe of one such complaint, she allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 30 lakh from the complainant.

According to sources cited in the visible report, she had received Rs 2 lakh earlier, while Rs 28 lakh was to be received on the day of the incident. The Anti-Corruption Bureau acted on the complaint and laid a trap near Hotel Conrad on Bund Garden Road.

Private Person Caught Collecting Money

The bribe amount was allegedly being accepted through a private person, who was caught red-handed while collecting the money. Following this, Totewar was also taken into custody.

The report identifies Totewar as an Assistant Police Inspector who had recently been promoted and transferred from the Pune City Police to the Mumbai Railway Police as a Police Inspector. She had been officially relieved from her Pune duties on Friday and was yet to assume her new post.

Searches Launched After Arrest

After the arrest, multiple ACB teams launched simultaneous searches. One team searched her office cabin at the Police Commissionerate, while another conducted a raid at her residence.

The searches were still underway, and officials were examining further evidence related to the case. The incident has drawn attention within the police department, particularly as the officer was on the verge of taking charge of a higher post following her promotion. Further investigation is underway.
